Mechanochemical Synthesis and Characterization of Nanostructured ErB4 and NdB4 Rare‐Earth Tetraborides

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, Volume 27, Issue 6, March 2025.
ErB4 and NdB4 nanostructured powders are produced by mechanochemical synthesis. 5 h mechanical alloying and 4 M HCl acid leaching are used in the production. ErB4 and NdB4 powders exhibit maximum magnetization of 0.4726 emu g−1 accompanied with an antiferromagnetic‐to‐paramagnetic phase transition at about TN = 18 K and 0.132 emu g−1 with a maximum at ...

Scanning electron microscope studies of Avena coleoptiles during primary leaf emergence

open access: yesActa Societatis Botanicorum Poloniae, 2014
A scanning electron microscope study of the fine structure of coleoptiles of Avena sativa L. cv. Clintford has revealed information about the relationship between aspects of coleoptilar structure and the emergence of the primary leaf. Stomata are located

A Scanning Probe Microscope in My Scanning Electron Microscope? [PDF]

open access: yesMicroscopy Today, 1995
Abstract Scanning probe microscopes (SPMs) designed to fit into scanning elec- tron microscopes (SEMs) are now becoming commercially available and you might ask, "Why would I want to put an SPM in my SEM"? The primary reason is that the too forms of microscope are very complimentary. Each microscope extends the power of the other.

Flexible high-voltage supply for experimental electron microscope [PDF]

open access: yes, 1969
Scanning microscope uses a field-emission tip for the electron source, an electron gun that simultaneously accelerates and focuses electrons from the source, and one auxiliary lens to produce a final probe size at the specimen on the order of ...

A Different Perspective on the Solid Lubrication Performance of Black Phosphorous: Friend or Foe?

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Researchers investigate black phosphorous (BP) as a standalone solid lubricant coating through ball‐on‐disc linear‐reciprocating sliding experiments in dry conditions. Testing on different metals shows BP doesn't universally reduce friction and wear. However, it achieves 33% friction reduction on rougher iron surfaces and 23% wear reduction on aluminum.

Analysis of Electromagnetic Interference Effect on Semiconductor Scanning Electron Microscope Image Distortion

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2023
Most electronic devices are susceptible to electromagnetic interference (EMI); thus, it is necessary to recognize and identify the cause and effect of EMI as it can corrupt electronic signals and degrade equipment performance.

X‐Ray Computed Tomography Quantifies Primary Phases and Reveals Crack Morphology in High‐Cycle Fatigue of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Primary phases and a fatigue crack are studied in a forged blank of an aluminum alloy using synchrotron and laboratory X‐ray computed tomography. To image the crack, the fatigue test is interrupted, and a static tensile load is applied to open the crack.

Resonant electron heating and molecular phonon cooling in single C$_{60}$ junctions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
We study heating and heat dissipation of a single \c60 molecule in the junction of a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) by measuring the electron current required to thermally decompose the fullerene cage.

Influence of a Standard Heat Treatment on the Microstructure and Properties of Inconel X‐750 Produced by Laser Powder Bed Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Ni‐base superalloys produced using additive manufacturing (AM) have a different response to heat treatments when compared to their conventional counterparts. Due to such unpredictability, various alloys with industrial interest are currently overlooked in most prior AM research.
