Scanning Electron Microscopy of Bone

open access: yes, 2011
This chapter described methods for Scanning Electron Microscopical imaging of bone and bone cells. Backscattered electron (BSE) imaging is by far the most useful in the bone field, followed by secondary electrons (SE) and the energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analytical modes.

Serial Block-Face Scanning Electron Microscopy to Reconstruct Three-Dimensional Tissue Nanostructure

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2004
Three-dimensional (3D) structural information on many length scales is of central importance in biological research. Excellent methods exist to obtain structures of molecules at atomic, organelles at electron microscopic, and tissue at light-microscopic ...

Numerical Studies of Influencing Factors on the Homogeneity of the Powder Mixture during the Powder Spreading Process of Powder Bed Fusion–Laser Beam/Metal

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
AISI 304L stainless steel powder is mixed with silicon nitride (Si3N4) powder and processed by PBF‐LB/M, allowing partial retention of Si3N4. The numerical approach effectively predicts the Si3N4 powder homogeneity and N content distribution on the powder bed. Recent studies have focused on the alloying of nitrogen (N) in high‐alloy stainless steels by

Proximity Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy/Spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
Here a new microscopic method is proposed to image and characterize very thin samples like few-layer materials, organic molecules, and nanostructures with nanometer or sub-nanometer resolution using electron beams of energies lower than 20 eV. The microscopic technique achieves high resolution through the proximity (or near-field) effect, as in ...

Development of Ternary Magnesium Alloys for Laser Powder Bed Fusion: Optimizing Oxide Layer Thickness

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing of magnesium alloys by laser is difficult because the melting point of the oxide layer is much higher than the evaporation temperature of the metal underneath. Making the oxide layer thinner can solve this problem. Alloying magnesium with strontium makes the oxide layer thinner, especially at 0.5 wt%.

Metabolic and ultrastructural renal changes in adult Wistar rats fed by a cafeteria diet [PDF]

open access: yesActa Cirúrgica Brasileira
Purpose: To evaluate, by quantitative and qualitative methods, the glomerular ultrastructure in Wistar rats fed a cafeteria diet. Methods: Male Wistar rats were divided into two groups at 21 days of age: control (C, n = 10) and cafeteria diet (CAF, n ...

Scanning Electron Microscopy

open access: yes, 2022
Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) is the most preferred method in microstructural analysis today. In this method, electrons accelerated by high voltage (0-30 kV) are focused on the sample. During the scanning of the surface of this focused electron beam, electrons and material atoms interact. Electrons and X-rays formed as a result of this interaction

Maillard Type Reaction for Electroless Copper Plating onto Ceramic Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work presents the manufacturing of copper‐plated ceramic nanoparticles in an environmentally friendly way. Supported by organic functionalizations with pectin an electroless plating step can be performed. Sustainable reagents like xylose, and several amino acids are used for the reduction process.
