The scaphoid is the most commonly fractured of the eight carpal wrist bones. The mechanism of injury is usually from a fall on the outstretched hand. Initial radiographs may not identify a scaphoid fracture. A high index of suspicion given to these biomechanics and the physical findings will assist in the identification of this fracture.

Scaphoid fractures are the most common carpal bone fracture, usually occurring in young men, although the incidence in women has increased over the past decade. Snuffbox tenderness and/or pain with axial loading of the thumb should be treated as a scaphoid fracture until proved otherwise and the diagnosis confirmed with serial radiographs and/or ...

Scaphoid fracture and scaphoid pseudarthrosis
Der Orthopäde, 1999Careful diagnostic and early therapy are especially important in cases of scaphoid fractures. This is due to the patients being mostly young and the high number of non-unions of these carpal bones. Conservative and various operative treatments are therapeutical options.

Fractures of the immature carpal scaphoid can be challenging to manage. The diagnosis may be missed or delayed because of absent or minimal symptoms. Once diagnosed, most pediatric scaphoid fractures can be successfully treated with cast immobilization. However, this is inadequate for difficult and unique cases.

Scaphoid fracture epidemiology
Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery, 2012The current available literature related to scaphoid fracture epidemiology is inconsistent. The aim of this study was to describe the epidemiology of true scaphoid fractures in a defined adult population.Using a prospective database, we identified all patients who sustained a radiographically confirmed acute fracture of the scaphoid over a 1-year ...

Robot-assisted percutaneous scaphoid fracture fixation: a report of ten patients
Journal of Hand Surgery (European Volume), 2019This study reports the technique, efficacy and safety of robotic-assisted, computer-navigated, percutaneous fixation of scaphoid fractures. Ten males with acute undisplaced waist fractures underwent fixation with this method using a commercially ...

Scaphoid fracture geometrics: an assessment of location and orientation
Journal of Plastic Surgery and Hand Surgery, 2019The location and angle of scaphoid fractures are important attributes which guide management. We used a 3 dimensional scaphoid model, generated from CT scans, to map scaphoid fracture planes. The point at which the fracture plane crossed the central axis

Scaphoid fractures are often a difficult management problem, most typically affecting young men in their most active and productive years. A systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment can decrease the risk of management error and morbidity.
