Acoustic impedance and interface phonon scattering in Bi$_2$Te$_3$ and other semiconducting materials

open access: yes, 2012
We present first principles calculations of the phonon dispersions of Bi2Te3 and discuss these in relation to the acoustic phonon interface scattering in ceramics.

A Depolarizing Leak in Sodium Bicarbonate Cotransporter NBCe1 Causes Brain Edema

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Objectives SLC4A4 encodes electrogenic sodium bicarbonate cotransporter NBCe1, prominently expressed in kidney and brain. Recessive loss‐of‐function variants in SLC4A4 cause proximal renal tubular acidosis, no brain edema. In the brain, NBCe1 is expressed by astrocytes, where it regulates pH and mediates astrocyte volume changes.

Insights on the African Upper Mantle From Quasi‐Love Wave Scattering

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
The African upper mantle is diverse, featuring several cratonic roots, active and magmatic continental rifting, abundant intra‐plate volcanism, and several oceanic hotspots offshore.

Optical molecular anisotropy of materials and rayleigh scattering

open access: yesZaštita Materijala, 2017
Rayleigh scattering expressed with formalism of depolarized and polarized components offers possibilites for analysis of optical molecular anisotropy for liquid materials (pure, diluted solutions with large and small molecules). Various devices exist for

Effect of Co doping on the in-plane anisotropy in the optical spectrum of underdoped Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2

open access: yes, 2012
We investigated the anisotropy in the in-plane optical spectra of detwinned Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2. The optical conductivity spectrum of BaFe2As2 shows appreciable anisotropy in the magnetostructural ordered phase, whereas the dc resistivity is almost ...

Whistler anisotropy instability: Wave‐particle scattering rate [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Space Physics, 2002
An electron temperature anisotropy T⊥e > T∥e (where ⊥ and ∥ refer to directions relative to the background magnetic field) can excite the whistler anisotropy instability in a collisionless plasma. The resulting enhanced fluctuating magnetic fields scatter the electrons and reduce the anisotropy.

Investigation of Laser Ablation and Brush Pre‐Treatments for AlCu Cold Roll Bonding in Oxygen‐Free Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
It is shown that laser ablation pretreatment under oxygen‐free conditions enables copper–aluminium bonding at significantly lower deformation degrees and improved properties compared to mechanical brushing. Laser ablation further increases interface contact area and induces favourable residual stress states and microstructural compatibility ...

Single-Fiber Reflectance Spectroscopy of Isotropic-Scattering Medium: An Analytic Perspective to the Ratio-of-Remission in Steady-State Measurements

open access: yesPhotonics, 2014
Recent focused Monte Carlo and experimental studies on steady-state single-fiber reflectance spectroscopy (SfRS) from a biologically relevant scattering medium have revealed that, as the dimensionless reduced scattering of the medium increases, the SfRS ...

Thermodynamic Pathways of Nonequilibrium Solidification in Wire‐Arc Additive Manufacturing Fe‐Based Multicomponent Alloy Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Geometry‐driven thermal behavior in wire‐arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) influences microstructural evolution during nonequilibrium solidification of a chemically complex Fe–Cr–Nb–W–Mo–C nanocomposite system. By comparing different deposits configurations, distinct entropy–cooling rate correlations, segregation, and carbide evolution are revealed ...
