Plastic Inputs to Lake Rotorua: An Initial Assessment of Stormwater Stream Plastic Loads and Capture Devices

open access: yesNew Zealand Journal of Marine and Freshwater Research, Volume 60, Issue 3, September 2026.
Plastics are a known but inconsistently researched challenge to Aotearoa New Zealand's inland freshwater systems. Understanding plastic origins, movement, and removal options for individual water bodies can enhance management efforts. This exploratory study quantified meso‐ and macroplastics entering Lake Rotorua through stormwater streams and assessed

Expert Asymmetry: Evidence From Securities Litigation

open access: yesJournal of Empirical Legal Studies, Volume 23, Issue 3, Page 293-326, September 2026.
ABSTRACT Modern litigation often involves two separate, extra‐legal features: (1) contingency fee arrangements with the plaintiff‐side attorney, and (2) a “battle of the experts” where the outcome of the case rests on conflicting expert witness testimony.

Circuit organization and transcriptomic heterogeneity of sympathetic circuits innervating cranial structures

open access: yesCell Reports
Summary: The superior cervical ganglion (SCG) innervates multiple effector organs within cranial tissues and elicits responses including pupil dilation, piloerection, vasoconstriction, and inhibition of salivation. Coordinated activation of these targets

Topliss‐Guided Optimization of Acetanilide‐Based Soluble Epoxide Hydrolase Inhibitors: Exploring the Pentafluorosulfanyl Group as a Potency‐Enhancing Motif

open access: yesChemMedChem, Volume 21, Issue 16, 27 August 2026.
Can an amide analog retain the high potency of the classic urea motif in soluble epoxide hydrolase inhibitors? Through a single unconventional switch, the introduction of the underexplored pentafluorosulfanyl group into an amide analog of TPPU, the authors restored high inhibitory potency.

Defying Expectations: Extended Lifespan and Age‐Related Telomere Dynamics in the Tropical Bat Species, Molossus molossus

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 8, August 2026.
We investigated age‐related telomere dynamics in the tropical bat Molossus molossus using a long‐term mark‐recapture study of 492 individuals from Panama. We documented a female surviving to at least 13 years, more than doubling the previously reported maximum lifespan, while finding no consistent evidence of age‐related telomere shortening.

Enrichment of Bakery Products with Antioxidant and Dietary Fiber Ingredients Obtained from Spent Coffee Ground

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Spent Coffee Ground (SCG) is the main coffee industry by-product, rich in dietary fibers and polyphenols. The extractable material of SCG was fractionated, and the phenolic compounds were identified and quantified.

Race‐Based Rejection Sensitivity and Intergroup Anxiety Across the Adult Lifespan: Examining Age, Cohort, and Period Effects Among Ethnic Majority and Minority Groups

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Social Psychology, Volume 56, Issue 5, Page 939-958, August 2026.
ABSTRACT Intergroup interactions are often fraught with fear of rejection and intergroup anxiety—emotional reactions that undermine efforts to build inclusive societies. The current research investigates how race‐based rejection sensitivity and intergroup anxiety evolve across the adult lifespan.

Octave‐Spanning, Deterministic Single Soliton Generation in 4H‐Silicon Carbide‐On‐Insulator Microring Resonators

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, Volume 20, Issue 15, 7 August 2026.
The miniaturization of metrology and precision spectroscopy systems requires robust, turn‐key microcombs with broad bandwidth, low threshold, and high efficiency. Here, high‐Q, dispersion‐engineered microresonators in a high‐confinement nonlinear SiC platform, combined with waveguide‐enabled thermal management and laser cooling, enable deterministic ...
