Effectiveness and Students’ Perception of the Use of Pre-reading Strategies and Summaries: A Case Study of Adult EFL Students in a Reading Comprehension Course

open access: yesRevista de Lenguas Modernas, 2018
This study is aimed at providing an answer to the questions of how the completion of pre-reading exercises and summaries can enhance learners’ reading comprehension and what their perceptions of the usefulness of these tools to read texts in English are.

Degradation mechanism of the von Willebrand factor A2 domain by nattokinase

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Nattokinase, a natto‐derived protease, exhibits potent antithrombotic effects. This study demonstrates that nattokinase directly cleaves the von Willebrand factor (vWF) A2 domain in vitro. Unlike the native regulator ADAMTS13, nattokinase degrades folded vWF independently of shear stress.

Microbiome−host proteostasis crosstalk—An emerging perspective on mechanisms and interventions toward healthy longevity

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Proteostasis and the gut microbiota play a key role in shaping host physiology. Microbiota‐derived metabolites, vitamins, and RNA modulate host proteostasis. Findings from model systems, including C. elegans, indicate microbes can either stabilize or disrupt host proteostasis.

The utilization of schemata in esl reading [PDF]

open access: yes, 1990
Reading is a crucial skill in the literate world. This fact has driven many to engage in reading research tirelessly. One of the breakthroughs in this research was the realization of the fact that schemata play a significant role in the reading process ...

From mice to humans—divergent strategies for intestinal homeostasis and regeneration

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Recent advances such as organoid genome editing, xenotransplantation, imaging, and whole‐genome sequencing have enabled direct studies of human intestinal stem cells (ISCs). These studies reveal species‐specific features, including slower ISC proliferation, distinct injury responses, slower somatic mutation accumulation in humans, and an inverse ...

Structural insights and therapeutic targets in Acinetobacter baumannii capsule biosynthesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Hypervirulent KL49 A. baumannii's capsular polysaccharide contains the nonulosonic acid 8‐epi‐Leg5,7Ac2, synthesized by epimerization via ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC. Crystal structures of ElaA, ElaB, and ElaC reveal their role in CMP‐Leg5,7Ac2 synthesis and regioselective C8 epimerization.

On Synergies of Schema Theory and Theory of Levels. A Perspective from Riepel’s Fonte and Monte [PDF]

open access: yesZeitschrift der Gesellschaft für Musiktheorie, 2015
Using specific examples I want to examine the extent to which the schema concept and the Schenkerian concept of hierarchical organized tonal structures may interlock or, at least, illuminate each other.

Modelling stem cell differentiation related processes—A practical overview for biologists

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Stem cell differentiation is complex and difficult to control experimentally. This review introduces suitable computational modelling approaches that can support stem cell research, from mechanistic ODE and abstract models to multiscale and deep learning methods.
