Adsorbents from Schinopsis balansae: Optimisation of significant variables

Industrial Crops and Products, 2011
Abstract The current article presents the study of the influencing variables in gelification process of Schinopsis balansae tannin extract. This product is an adsorbent for wastewater remediation since it retains cationic pollutants such as heavy metals, surfactants or dyes.

Analysis of commercial proanthocyanidins. Part 1: The chemical composition of quebracho (Schinopsis lorentzii and Schinopsis balansae) heartwood extract

Phytochemistry, 2012
Quebracho (Schinopsis lorentzii and Schinopsis balansae) extract is an important source of natural polymers for leather tanning and adhesive manufacturing. We combined established phyto- and synthetic chemistry perspectives with electrospray mass spectrometry experiments to prove that quebracho proanthocyanidin polymers consist of an homologous series ...

Surface water treatment with tannin-based coagulants from Quebracho (Schinopsis balansae)

Chemical Engineering Journal, 2010
Abstract Tannin-based coagulant agent called Silvafloc was tested on surface river water clarification. This novel coagulant can be used in drinking water treatment, and consist of a chemically modified tannin extract from Schinopsis balansae , commonly known as Quebracho colorado .

Histological Study of Aristolochia triangularis, Casearia sylvestris, and Schinopsis balansae

Journal of Pharmaceutical Sciences, 1962
The content of this paper is concerned with the external and internal morphology of three little-known South American plant drugs: the dried stems of Aristolochia triangularis (Aristolochiaceae), the dried stem bark of Casearia sylvestris (Flacourtiaceae), and the dried leaves of Schinopsis balansae (Anacardiaceae).

Factores bióticos y abióticos que afectan la calidad de las semillas de Schinopsis balansae Engl. y Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco Schltdl

Revista Iberoamericana de Micología, 2007
Aspidosperma quebracho-blanco (white quebracho) and Schinopsis balansae (red quebracho) are distinctive trees of the South American Park in Argentina. Quebrachos are found in forests that have been exploited very intensively. The object of this work was the identification of biotic and abiotic factors specially fungal pathogen that affect the quality ...

Formation and deposition of tannins in Quebracho colorado (Schinopsis balansae Engl.)

Holz als Roh- und Werkstoff, 1995
In Quebracho colorado heartwood tannins are located in the lumina of most parenchyma cells, fibres and vessels. Formation and deposition of the tannins were studied by electron microscopy. In parenchyma cells phenolic compounds first occur at the inner and outer side of the membranes of vacuoles.

Antimutagenic and antioxidant activities of quebracho phenolics (Schinopsis balansae) recovered from tannery wastewaters

Bioresource Technology, 2009
Quebracho extracts are used in tannery due to their high concentration of phenolics. The Mexican tannery industry uses around 450 kg/m(3) of which, 150 kg/m(3) remains in wastewaters and are discharged in drain pipe systems or rivers. The quebracho phenolics recovered from tannery wastewater (QPTW) was characterized by HPLC.

Schinopsis balansae tannin-based flocculant in removing sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate

Separation and Purification Technology, 2009
Abstract A new tannin-based coagulant and flocculant agent has been tested on the removal of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), a dangerous and pollutant anionic surfactant. It is called SilvaFLOC and consists of a chemical modified tannin extract from Schinopsis balansae , commonly known as Quebracho .

Analysis of commercial proanthocyanidins. Part 2: An electrospray mass spectrometry investigation into the chemical composition of sulfited quebracho (Schinopsis lorentzii and Schinopsis balansae) heartwood extract

Phytochemistry, 2012
Proanthocyanidins (PACs) are natural plant-derived polymers used in leather tanning, wood adhesives, water purification, and mud additives for oil drilling. Quebracho (Schinopsis lorentzii and Schinopsis balansae) heartwood and mimosa (Acacia mearnsii) bark extracts are the major industrial sources of PACs.
