Schistosomiasis mansoni – Clinical features
Gastroenterología y Hepatología, 2005In the present review, we will discuss the Schistosoma mansoni form, which is the most widely distributed schistosome in humans and is found both in the Old and New Worlds. The main features of the natural history of mansonic schistosomiasis are reviewed, with emphasis on the clinical forms of the disease, their diagnosis and treatment.

Schistosoma mansoni is common in Nigeria as well as in other countries of West Africa (Edington, 1979). The eggs are laid in the small venules of the submucosal layer of the intestinal wall and pass out usually in the faeces but some may enter the blood stream to be found in any organ of the body (Edington et al., 1975).

Splenomegaly in Schistosomiasis Mansoni
The American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1962Summary Egg counts for Schistosoma mansoni in part of the population of a highly endemic town in Pernambuco, Brazil, showed that after reaching a maximum early in life, egg output decreased sharply. It is felt that acquired immunity may be involved. While splenomegaly in other parasitic or infectious diseases may start in infancy, spleen enlargement in

Heterophile Antibodies in Schistosomiasis Mansoni
The Journal of Parasitology, 1967Heterophile-antibody titers were determined in sera from apparently healthy individuals and from patients infected with Schistosoma mansoni. The conglutination technique demonstrated ag- glutinating titers equal to or higher than 1:40 in 100% of the schistosome patients, in 80% of the pa- tients with helminthiases other than schistosomiasis, and in 62%

CT of hepatic schistosomiasis mansoni
American Journal of Roentgenology, 1985Schistosomal periportal fibrosis produced a typical pattern on computed tomography in five patients. Low-density periportal tissue, present throughout the liver, enhanced strongly after the administration of contrast medium. While rounded in cross section, the thickened periportal tissue produced linear and branching patterns when imaged in ...

MRI of Hepatic Schistosomiasis Mansoni
Journal of Computer Assisted Tomography, 1995Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed in a patient with hepatic schistosomiasis mansoni. On T1-weighted images periportal zones appeared isointense to the surrounding liver, but strongly enhanced after injection of Gd-DTPA. This finding equals periportal enhancement in postcontrast CT studies and does not discriminate between periportal ...

Haematuria in experimental schistosomiasis mansoni
Transactions of the Royal Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, 1983Haematuria was found in 27% of mice experimentally infected with Schistosoma mansoni. The presence of red blood cells in the urine was detected only after the sixth week of infection. Haematuria was not due to the direct action of the parasite, since no eggs were found in the urinary system.

RENAL TRANSPLANTATION AND SCHISTOSOMIASIS MANSONI
Transplantation, 1987Eleven patients with schistosomiasis mansoni received a renal transplant. In 5 patients, the schistosomiasis was asymptomatic and had been diagnosed by routine examinations and had no relationship to nephropathy. In 4 patients, the nephropathy was suggestive of being of schistosomal origin.
