Soil health assessment using buried cotton underpants with the help of 1000 citizen scientists

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Soil is a vital resource for life on Earth. Although many soils are degraded, societal awareness of soil‐related issues is limited. To highlight soil as a key resource and fascinating study system, we initiated a citizen science project together with 1000 participants investigating soil health across Switzerland using buried cotton underpants.

Genomic architecture and breeding trade‐offs of coconut drought tolerance

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
The coconut palm is an extremely popular and economically important crop, with around 65 million tonnes produced in 2023. Although Africa's coconut sector is growing rapidly, it—and the livelihoods that depend on it—is threatened by climate change, particularly increased drought.

An extinction‐emergency metacollection: Maximising future recovery options for Rhodomyrtus psidioides (Myrtaceae), threatened by Myrtle Rust

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
A challenge for wild plant conservation is the rising incidence of plant pathogens that are difficult to interdict, contain and manage. Invasive, fast‐moving, broad‐spectrum pathogens impose societal costs through losses of intrinsically valuable wild biodiversity, ecosystem function, current and potential genetic and biological assets, culturally ...

Enhance food plant diversity conservation and use through greater coordination between genebanks and botanic gardens

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Food plants are vital to human and planetary health, but their diversity is threatened, making food security, nutrition, and environmental goals more difficult to achieve. Food plant diversity conservation, research, and education can be enhanced through collaboration between sectors, including genebanks and botanic gardens, which possess complementary

An urban evolved invasive plant tolerates experimental climate change

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Urbanization may drive invasive species evolution, resulting in greater invasion risks as global conditions change. We compared urban populations of the invasive Erigeron annuus in Zagreb, Croatia, to surrounding rural populations and found that urban‐evolved populations were more tolerant of experimental warming and drought than rural populations ...

When alien plants become health hazards: An applied study on toxic and allergenic risks in Italy

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, EarlyView.
Alien plants are often studied for their ecological harm, but their risks to human and animal health remain poorly documented. This study provides the first comprehensive catalogue of poisonous and allergenic alien plants in Italy, identifying which species are dangerous, where they grow and who is most at risk—from children in city parks to pets and ...
