THE PHILIPPINE MEDICAL SCHOOL [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of the American Medical Association, 1909
Statistics presented at the second annual meeting of the Philippine Islands Medical Association, held in February, 1905, showed that there were in the islands only an average of one physician to 21,209 of the population of the archipelago, or one to each 430 square miles of territory; this, in spite of the fact that the medical school of the University

Microbial exopolysaccharide production by polyextremophiles in the adaptation to multiple extremes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Polyextremophiles are microorganisms that endure multiple extreme conditions by various adaptation strategies that also include the production of exopolysaccharides (EPSs). This review provides an integrated perspective on EPS biosynthesis, function, and regulation in these organisms, emphasizing their critical role in survival and highlighting their ...

Business schools inside the academy: What are the prospects for interdepartmental research collaboration? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Established literature about the role of business schools tends towards more parochial concerns, such as their need for a more pluralist and socially reflexive mode of knowledge production (Starkey and Tiratsoo 2007; Starkey et al 2009) or the failure of

Single cis‐elements in brassinosteroid‐induced upregulated genes are insufficient to recruit both redox states of the BIL1/BZR1 DNA‐binding domain

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phytohormone brassinosteroid‐induced gene regulation by the transcription factor BIL1/BZR1 involves redox‐dependent DNA‐binding alternation and interaction with the transcription factor PIF4. The reduced BIL1/BZR1 dimer binds preferred cis‐elements, while oxidation alters its oligomerization state and disrupts DNA‐binding ability.

THE CHEMISTRY OF THE MEDICAL SCHOOL. [PDF]

open access: yesJAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1904
In the present condition of rapid growth and devel opment in our medical schools, one of the vexing problems which has come up for solution is with reference to the kind and amount of chemistry which should be taught. It is evident to any one who takes the trouble to look that the methods and concepts of somewhat advanced chemistry are becoming more ...

Highly multiplexed digital PCR assay for simultaneous quantification of variant allele frequencies and copy number alterations of KRAS and GNAS in pancreatic cancer precursors

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Combining melting curve analysis enhances the multiplexing capability of digital PCR. Here, we developed a 14‐plex assay to simultaneously measure single nucleotide mutations and amplifications of KRAS and GNAS, which are common driver genes in pancreatic cancer precursors. This assay accurately quantified variant allele frequencies in clinical samples

There are no schools for medical editors

open access: yesSouth African Medical Journal, 2013
There are no schools for medical editors. So warned Dan Ncayiayana, editor emeritus of the SAMJ. He is correct. Editorship is learned on the job. I have been fortunate to be the mentee of the retiring, but not-yet-retired, managing editor, J P van Niekerk, as I proudly assume the role of editor of this journal.
