Ablation of LRP6 in alpha‐smooth muscle actin‐expressing cells abrogates lung inflammation and fibrosis upon bleomycin‐induced lung injury

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Low‐density lipoprotein receptor‐related protein 6 (LRP6) is a key receptor for the Wnt antagonist Dickkopf1 (DKK1). DKK1 protein expression is induced in a bleomycin (BLM)‐induced lung injury model. We show that DKK1 induces proinflammatory and profibrotic genes in lung fibroblasts.

Future (of) Synchrotrons for Particle Therapy [PDF]

open access: yesCERN Yellow Report CERN-2017-004-SP pp. 293-307, 2018
The field of particle therapy is quickly growing and yet it's more widespread adoption is limited by size, cost and adaptation to the more conformal treatment techniques. In order to realize the benefits of this modality the equipment used to generate and deliver the beam is evolving.

Taurine promotes glucagon‐like peptide‐1 secretion in enteroendocrine L cells

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Taurine, a sulfur‐containing amino acid, is likely taken up by enteroendocrine L cells via the taurine transporter. This process increases the levels of cytosolic ATP. The increase in intracellular Ca2+ concentrations and glucagon‐like peptide‐1 secretion through membrane depolarization is caused by the closure of ATP‐sensitive potassium channels ...

Unsupervised Machine Learning and EMF radiation in schools: a study of 205 schools in Greece [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
The expansion of network infrastructure in Greece has raised concerns about the possible negative health effects on sensitive groups, such as children, from exposure to long-term radiofrequency electromagnetic fields (RF-EMFs). The objective of this study is to apply Unsupervised Machine Learning methods such as hierarchical clustering, in order to ...

Augmented Reality in Higher Education: a Case Study in Medical Education [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
During lockdown, we piloted a variety of augmented reality (AR) experiences in collaboration with subject matter experts from different fields aiming at creating remote teaching and training experiences. In this paper, we present a case study on how AR can be used as a teaching aid for medical education with pertinent focus on remote and social ...

Refining the NaV1.7 pharmacophore of a class of venom‐derived peptide inhibitors via a combination of in silico screening and rational engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Venom peptides have shown promise in treating pain. Our study uses computer screening to identify a peptide that targets a sodium channel (NaV1.7) linked to chronic pain. We produced the peptide in the laboratory and refined its design, advancing the search for innovative pain therapies.
