A comparative study of spinal bupivacaine with fentanyl versus ultrasound-guided combined lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve block in lower limb orthopedic procedures: A prospective randomized controlled trial.

open access: yesStudent's Journal of Health Research Africa
Background Spinal anesthesia with bupivacaine and fentanyl is widely used for its rapid onset, while ultrasound-guided lumbar plexus and sciatic nerve blocks are gaining popularity for prolonged postoperative analgesia with fewer systemic side effects ...

Preserved Daily Function Despite Significant Muscle Atrophy and Strength Deficits: A Matched‐Cohort Study of Iliopsoas Release for Ischiofemoral Impingement

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, EarlyView.
This matched‐cohort study reveals that iliopsoas release causes significant atrophy and weakness without fatty degeneration. While daily function is well‐preserved, the lower rate of achieving substantial clinical benefit in sports suggests potential limitations for high‐demand athletes.

Designing the ideal perioperative pain management plan starts with multimodal analgesia. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Multimodal analgesia is defined as the use of more than one pharmacological class of analgesic medication targeting different receptors along the pain pathway with the goal of improving analgesia while reducing individual class-related side effects ...

Efficacy Comparison of Open Reduction and Robot‐Aided Infra‐Acetabular and Posterior Column Screws Fixation in Complex Acetabular Fractures Surgery: Union Plate Versus Reconstruction Plate

open access: yesOrthopaedic Surgery, EarlyView.
Robot‐aided technology allowed for precise and minimally invasive placement of periarticular long screws in open surgery for complex acetabular fractures, while using the Union Plate could decrease operation difficulty (fewer channel adjustments, less time for robotic manipulation and intraoperative plate contouring), operation time, and bleeding.

A-Type KV Channels in Dorsal Root Ganglion Neurons: Diversity, Function, and Dysfunction [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
A-type voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels are major regulators of neuronal excitability that have been mainly characterized in the central nervous system. By contrast, there is a paucity of knowledge about the molecular physiology of these Kv channels

Trafficking and potentiation of Nav1.7 and Nav1.8 channels are mediated by IQGAP1

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend IQGAP1 binds to the voltage‐gated Nav1.7 and Nav1.8 channels and TRPA1 channels in sensory neurons. Inflammatory mediators (IM), including PGE2 and TNFα, released during nerve injury and inflammation activate intracellular signalling messengers such as PKA, p38 MAPK and Cdc42 through their respective receptors.

Machine‐learning classification of motor unit types in the adult mouse

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend The goal of this study was to build an algorithm for machine‐learning classification of motor unit (MU) physiological type in the adult mouse. We made intracellular recordings of triceps surae (TS) motoneurons in anaesthetized adult mice and recorded MU isometric force and electromyographic (EMG) activity.

A Rare Primary Pelvic Hydatid Cyst Presenting as Sciatica [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Primary hydatid cyst in the pelvis is rare, and usually presents with pressure symptoms affecting the adjacent abdominal organs. We describe a rare hydatid cyst which was eroding the sacral hallow, protruding into the right sciatic foramen and presenting
