Depth‐resolved X‐ray residual stress analysis on samples with cylindrically shaped surface topography

open access: yesJournal of Applied Crystallography, EarlyView.
Modifications of the fundamental equation of X‐ray stress analysis are proposed that allow correction of the hoop and longitudinal stresses obtained from sin2ψ measurements on samples featuring an inhomogeneous surface topography. The formalism is verified by angle‐ and energy‐dispersive measurements performed on a ferritic steel sample with ...

Enhancing microstructural fidelity in near‐field high‐energy diffraction microscopy reconstruction with Noise2Void denoising

open access: yesJournal of Applied Crystallography, EarlyView.
A self‐supervised deep learning model, Noise2Void (N2V), denoises near‐field high‐energy diffraction microscopy diffraction images without requiring unobtainable clean data. These images allow for lower segmentation thresholds and detection of smaller and weaker diffraction peaks, which are often discarded or overlooked with conventional image ...

Elliptical neutron‐focusing supermirrors with Ni–P‐plated Al–Si alloy substrates for multi‐incident‐angle neutron reflectometry

open access: yesJournal of Applied Crystallography, EarlyView.
Multi‐incident‐angle neutron reflectometry is realized using elliptical metallic supermirrors for dual‐beam focusing. This approach presents new opportunities for efficient interface analysis. This study introduces a novel approach for multi‐incident‐angle neutron reflectometry utilizing metallic elliptical supermirrors to enable the simultaneous ...

Design and performance of a capacitor‐based burn‐through monitor for high‐power X‐ray beams at XFEL facilities

open access: yesJournal of Synchrotron Radiation, EarlyView.
We present the results of testing 92 prototypes of a capacitor‐based burn‐through monitor at the LCLS XCS and XPP endstations. We quantify the beam energy density thresholds required to induce a detectable high‐voltage electrical short prior to complete burn‐through and demonstrate the reliability of this scalable, low‐cost solution for machine and ...

Rapid hormonal rise in honey bees due to heat‐shock is mitigated by a primer pheromone

open access: yesInsect Science, EarlyView.
We show that honey bee foragers increased juvenile hormone (JH) titers significantly after heat‐shocked for 1 h at 40 °C, but this increase is dependent on social conditions. Increase of JH titers only happened when bees were isolated (one worker bee per vial) but not in groups.
