Temporal changes in the dietary niche of sympatric seals provides insight into the role of competition in population declines

open access: yesOikos, EarlyView.
Competition theory suggests that interspecific prey competition can result in changes to the dietary niche, but obtaining timeseries of data from sympatric species experiencing temporal variation in competition is challenging. Scotland is an important area for two species of seals, but over the past 20 years, populations of harbour seals Phoca vitulina

Ontologies for Sustainability: Theoretical Challenges

open access: yesSustainable Development, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The lack of sustainable practices in key sectors of human societies is a global concern, posing threats for the whole planet. This paper provides the first review of ontologies for sustainability efforts, outlining their roles in assessing and advancing such efforts. Section 2 outlines three major challenges associated with sustainability: (1)

The link between social comparison orientation and domain-specific risk-taking: exploring the mediating role of two dimensions of trait competitiveness

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology
IntroductionOur recent research has demonstrated that social comparison orientation of ability (SCO-ability) is an antecedent of trait competitiveness (TC), and TC mediates the relation between SCO-ability and domain-specific risk-taking.

The peculiar nova V1309 Sco/Nova Sco 2008: A candidate twin of V838 Mon

open access: yes, 2010
Nova Scorpii 2008 was the target of our Directory Discretionary Time proposal at VLT+UVES in order to study the evolution, origin and abundances of the heavy-element absorption system recently discovered in 80% of classical novae in outburst.

Optical‐controlled magnon transport based on spin crossover switched molecular magnets

open access: yesSmart Molecules, EarlyView.
A cyanide‐bridged W(V)–Fe(II) spin‐crossover single crystal was integrated into a magnon transport device, enabling reversible optical control of magnon transport through photo‐switched spin states. Abstract Molecule‐based devices that combine the advantages of fast time response and extremely low manipulation/transmission energy consumption of light ...

The 2000 outburst of the recurrent nova CI Aquilae: optical spectroscopy

open access: yes, 2000
We present low- and medium resolution spectra of the recurrent nova CI Aquilae taken at 14 epochs in May and June, 2000. The overall appearance is similar to other U Sco-type recurrent novae (U Sco, V394 CrA).

Guiding the Formation of Surface‐Confined 2D Metal–Organic Coordination Networks by Variation of Constituent Landing Energy in Electrospray Deposition of an Iron(II) Grid Complex

open access: yesSmall Methods, EarlyView.
Electrospray ion beam deposition (ES‐IBD) of an Fe(II) [2 × 2] grid complex onto Ag(111) reveals landing energy‐dependent fragmentation and self‐assembly. At higher landing energies, novel coordination networks emerge. This study highlights the unique potential of ES‐IBD in creating diverse metal–organic architectures on surfaces.
