Revisiting recent phylogenetic studies of “Scorpaeniformes”

1998 and also highlighted their differing points of view. A revised English version of the main part of the Shinohara and Imamura (2005a) contribution, together with notes on two further morphological papers [Shinohara and Imamura (2005b) and Imamura et al. (2005)] follows herein. Although some authors included Dactylopteridae within “Scorpaeniformes” (

Preliminary classification of the gurnards (Triglidae: Scorpaeniformes)

Marine and Freshwater Research, 2002
The triglid fishes, commonly known as gurnards or searobins, are found in tropical and temperate waters of the world’s oceans. This preliminary classification recognizes 8 genera and ~125 species, of which ~15 species are undescribed. This classification is based on 11 morphological characters, most of which are osteological.

Cytogenetic Studies in some Species of Scorpaeniformes (Teleostei: Percomorpha)

Chromosome Research, 1998
Cytogenetic studies were performed in four species of two scorpaeniform teleost families: Scorpaenidae and Triglidae. The karyotypes of Trigla lucerna, Trigloporus lastoviza (Triglidae), Scorpaena porcus and S. notata (Scorpaenidae) were analysed using various banding methods and in situ hybridization with a telomeric probe.

Comparative osteology of Cyclopsis tentacularis (Cyclopteridae, Scorpaeniformes)

Journal of Ichthyology, 2009
The structure of the skeleton of Cyclopsis tentacularis, an endemic species from the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk, is studied for the first time. Generally, it corresponds to that in other representatives of Cyclopteridae. The differences in structure of Cyclopsis and of other investigated cyclopterids are both plesiomorphic and apomorphic.
