Scorpion Envenomation

New England Journal of Medicine, 2014
Every year, more than 1 million cases of scorpion envenomation are reported worldwide. Although the resultant mortality is lower than that from snake envenomation, there is substantial morbidity and, among children, a risk of death. Almost all systemic scorpion envenomation causes pain at the site of the sting.

Integration of phylogenomics and molecular modeling reveals lineage-specific diversification of toxins in scorpions

open access: yesPeerJ, 2018
Scorpions have evolved a variety of toxins with a plethora of biological targets, but characterizing their evolution has been limited by the lack of a comprehensive phylogenetic hypothesis of scorpion relationships grounded in modern, genome-scale ...

Potential distribution patterns of scorpions in north-eastern Brazil under scenarios of future climate change

, 2020
Current predictions about the responses of species to climate change strongly rely on projecting altered environmental conditions on their distributions.

SCORPION, a molecular database of scorpion toxins

Toxicon, 2002
Increasing interest in the studies of toxins and the requirements for better structural and functional annotations have created a need for improved data management in the field of toxins. The molecular database, SCORPION, contains more than 200 entries of fully referenced scorpion toxin data including primary sequences, three-dimensional structures ...

Epidemiology of scorpionism in France: nationwide scorpion exposure

Clinical Toxicology, 2021
In France, 57 species of scorpions are described with a limited number of clinical studies. In this article, we report the epidemiology of scorpion sting events in mainland France and its overseas territories based on cases reported to the French poison-control centres (FPCC).This retrospective multicentre study was conducted with data from FPCC's ...

Environmental variation and seasonal changes as determinants of the spatial distribution of scorpions (Arachnida: Scorpiones) in Neotropical forests

Canadian Journal of Zoology, 2018
Habitat selection and seasonal changes are key drivers of the population dynamics of many species. We analyzed how the environmental structure influences species establishment in an area by comparing microhabitat preference and functional richness of ...

SCORPIONS ( Scorpiones )

2002
Scorpions represent an ancient group of arachnids. There are 1077 species, 117 genera, and 9 families of scorpions. Buthidae is the largest and most widespread scorpion family. The scorpion body is divided into two major parts: the prosoma (cephalothorax) and the opisthosoma (abdomen).

Parthenogenesis in scorpions: some history - new data

open access: yesJournal of Venomous Animals and Toxins Including Tropical Diseases, 2008
Parthenogenesis, a rare phenomenon in Chelicerates, apart from mites, is reviewed in scorpions, notably Tityus serrulatus Lutz & Mello from Brazil, Tityus columbianus (Thorell) from Colombia and Tityus metuendus Pocock from Peru and Brazil.
