The myth of scorpion suicide: are scorpions insensitive to their own venom? [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Experimental Biology, 1998
ABSTRACT The resistance of the scorpion Androctonus australis to its own venom, as well as to the venom of other species, was investigated. A comparison of the electrical and pharmacological properties of muscle and nerve fibres from Androctonus australis with those from the crayfish Procambarus clarkii enabled us to understand the lack ...

Breaking the mould? Whiteness, masculinity, Welshness, working-classness and rugby league in Wales [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Traditionally, rugby in Wales has meant rugby union, the once-amateur, fifteen-a-side code that has a long history of working-class, male involvement in the Valleys of South Wales (Williams, G., 1985).

Symmetries in Images on Ancient Seals [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
We discuss the presence of symmetries in images engraved on ancient seals, in particular on stamp seals. Used to stamp decorations, to secure the containers from tampering and for owner's identification, we can find seals that can be dated from Neolithic

Controlled Ghost Fishing: Effects of Soaking Times and Mesh Sizes on Catchability in Trammel Net Fisheries

open access: yesFisheries Management and Ecology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Trammel nets are used with extended soaking times to increase the catching efficiency for demersal fish in commercial fishing. Long soaking time causes deterioration or damage to species caught in the first days. Effects of soaking time were investigated with 36‐mm, 42‐mm, and 46‐mm mesh sizes soaked over 1, 3, 5, and 7 days on target, non ...

Some corners are more equal than others: Beetles linger longer in acute‐angled corners than in obtuse‐angled ones

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
Red flour beetles, a common pest of stored products, tend to follow walls but linger longer in corners, especially in narrower shelters and acute‐angled corners. When navigating obstacles, acute‐angled obstacles delayed their arrival at a target more effectively than obtuse‐angled ones.

Does a Cadillac engine need a biological and phylogenetic explanation? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
In this text we briefly explore whether ridiculing material objects like a ‘Cadillac engine’, a ‘desk’, ‘gold bars in a vault’ as reduction ad absurdum in ‘dialectical duels’ or as a metaphor for teaching evolution is really phylogenetically justified,

Metaphors and the Invention of Writing

open access: yesTopics in Cognitive Science, EarlyView.
Abstract The foundation of ancient, invented writing systems lies in the predominant iconicity of their sign shapes. However, these shapes are often used not for their referential meaning but in a metaphorical way, whereby one entity stands for another.
