Scrape-off layer current in diverted Tokamak

Nuclear Fusion, 1994
A negative current in the scrape-off region beyond the separatrix of a diverted Tokamak can improve its MHD stability. By utilizing a strong thermionic emitter a current of up to 25% of the plasma current can be driven in the scrape-off region. If the thermionic current is emitted at only one end of the open field lines, a current will flow in the ...

Influence of scrape-off layer on plasma confinement

Physics of Plasmas, 2011
The purpose of this paper is to discuss how plasma phenomena in the scrape-off layer (SOL) can affect the plasma density gradient at the separatrix and hence the plasma behavior inside the separatrix. The parallel flow loss rate and ionization rate in the SOL (related to the electron temperature and neutral gas density) affect the curvature of the ...

Scrape-off layer and divertor physics

Nuclear Fusion
Since the publication of the review Progress in the ITER Physics Basis (PIPB) in 2007, significant progress has been made in understanding the processes at the plasma-material interface. This review, part of the ITPA Nuclear Fusion Special Issue On the Path to Burning Plasma Operation, presents these developments, focusing on key areas such as the ...

Convective transport in the scrape-off layer of tokamaks

Physics of Plasmas, 2005
A detailed study of blob formation, dynamics, and the associated convective transport in the scrape-off layer (SOL) of tokamak plasmas is presented. Dissipation level in the system, in addition to the blob size, is shown to play an important role in determining whether a blob propagates as a coherent object.
