Parallel flow in the JET scrape-off layer

Plasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 2000
Parallel plasma flows with Mach number M≈0.5 have been measured in the JET scrape-off layer (SOL). These flows show a maximum some 10-20 mm mid-plane outside the separatrix, and decrease towards the separatrix. The flow reverses when BT and IP are reversed, but is asymmetric about zero.

Theory of the scrape-off layer for arbitrary collisionality

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 1980
Abstract A two-dimensional analysis of the plasma boundary in a tokamak with any given set of toroidal target plates (as in a poloidal divertor or in a toroidal limiter system) is presented. The related boundary value problem for the drift kinetic equation of plasma ions with arbitrary collisionality is converted into a Hilbert problem for several ...

Scrape-off layer and divertor physics

Nuclear Fusion
Since the publication of the review Progress in the ITER Physics Basis (PIPB) in 2007, significant progress has been made in understanding the processes at the plasma-material interface. This review, part of the ITPA Nuclear Fusion Special Issue On the Path to Burning Plasma Operation, presents these developments, focusing on key areas such as the ...

Chapter 6: Scrape-Off Layer Transport on JET

Fusion Science and Technology, 2008
The tokamak plasma boundary, which is typically identified with the area of open field lines known as the scrape-off layer (SOL), determines the degree of plasma-wall interaction.

Scrape-off layers in which ionisation is important

Journal of Nuclear Materials, 1984
Abstract Ionisation occuring in the scrape-off region of magnetically-confined plasmas can result in significant changes in the density profile. An analytic model is presented and results are compared with a computer model result for INTOR. Sub-layers are identified in the scrape-off layer, including a density plateau, and criteria for the existence ...
