Texture in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images is a combination of the intrinsic texture of scene backscattering and the texture due to noncoherent high-frequency multiplicative noise (HMN) interactions that reflect erroneous information and lead to ...

A New Remotely Operated Sensor Platform for Interdisciplinary Observations under Sea Ice
Observation of the climate and ecosystem of ice covered polar seas is a timely task for the scientific community. The goal is to assess the drastic and imminent changes of the polar sea ice cover induced by climate change. Retreating and thinning sea ice

Effects of Wave-Induced Sea Ice Break-Up and Mixing in a High-Resolution Coupled Ice-Ocean Model
Arctic sea ice plays a vital role in modulating the global climate. In the most recent decades, the rapid decline of the Arctic summer sea ice cover has exposed increasing areas of ice-free ocean, with sufficient fetch for waves to develop.

Microplastics in sea ice and seawater beneath ice floes from the Arctic Ocean
Within the past decade, an alarm was raised about microplastics in the remote and seemingly pristine Arctic Ocean. To gain further insight about the issue, microplastic abundance, distribution and composition in sea ice cores (n = 25) and waters ...

The giant tabular iceberg A68 broke away from the Larsen C Ice Shelf, Antarctic Peninsula, in July 2017. The evolution of A68 would have been affected by both the Larsen C Ice Shelf, the surrounding sea ice, and the nearby shallow seafloor. In this study,

Static and kinetic friction play a fundamental role in sea-ice mechanics. The coefficient of static friction increases with hold time under normal load and is modelled in terms of creep and fracture of asperities in contact. The coefficient of kinetic friction exhibits velocity strengthening at lower speeds and velocity weakening at intermediate speeds.

Fracture networks in sea ice [PDF]
Fracturing and refreezing of sea ice in the Kara sea are investigated using complex networkanalysis. By going to the dual network, where the fractures are nodes and their intersectionslinks, we gain access to topological features which are easy to measure and hence comparewith modeled networks.

Antarctic Sea Ice Area in CMIP6
Fully coupled climate models have long shown a wide range of Antarctic sea ice states and evolution over the satellite era. Here, we present a high‐level evaluation of Antarctic sea ice in 40 models from the most recent phase of the Coupled Model ...

Evaluation of Matching Costs for High-Quality Sea-Ice Surface Reconstruction from Aerial Images
Satellite remote sensing can be used effectively with a wide coverage and repeatability in large-scale Arctic sea-ice analysis. To produce reliable sea-ice information, satellite remote-sensing methods should be established and validated using accurate ...

Observing sea ice by very high-resolution (VHR) images not only improves the quality of lower-resolution remote sensing products (e.g., sea ice concentration, distribution of melt ponds and pressure ridges, sea ice surface roughness, etc.) by providing ...
