Can uncertainties in sea ice albedo reconcile patterns of data-model discord for the Pliocene and 20th/21st centuries? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
General Circulation Model simulations of the mid-Pliocene warm period (mPWP, 3.264 to 3.025 Myr ago) currently underestimate the level of warming that proxy data suggest existed at high latitudes, with discrepancies of up to 11°C for sea surface ...

Mosaicking Opportunistically Acquired Very High-Resolution Helicopter-Borne Images over Drifting Sea Ice Using COTS Sensors

open access: yesSensors, 2019
Observing sea ice by very high-resolution (VHR) images not only improves the quality of lower-resolution remote sensing products (e.g., sea ice concentration, distribution of melt ponds and pressure ridges, sea ice surface roughness, etc.) by providing ...

ASTER-Derived High-Resolution Ice Surface Temperature for the Arctic Coast

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2018
Ice surface temperature (IST) controls the rate of sea ice growth and the heat exchange between the atmosphere and ocean. In this study, high-resolution IST using the Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection radiometer (ASTER) thermal infrared

Friction of sea ice [PDF]

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2018
Static and kinetic friction play a fundamental role in sea-ice mechanics. The coefficient of static friction increases with hold time under normal load and is modelled in terms of creep and fracture of asperities in contact. The coefficient of kinetic friction exhibits velocity strengthening at lower speeds and velocity weakening at intermediate speeds.

Robust Mosaicking of Lightweight UAV Images Using Hybrid Image Transformation Modeling

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2020
This paper proposes a robust feature-based mosaicking method that can handle images obtained by lightweight unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). The imaging geometry of small UAVs can be characterized by unstable flight attitudes and low flight altitudes ...

The bimodality of the East Siberian fast ice extent: mechanisms and changes

open access: yesAnnals of Glaciology, 2023
Using operational sea-ice maps, we provide first insight into the seasonal evolution of fast ice in the East Siberian Sea for the period between 1999 and 2021.

The gravitationally consistent sea-level fingerprint of future terrestrial ice loss [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We solve the sea-level equation to investigate the pattern of the gravitationally self-consistent sea-level variations (fingerprints) corresponding to modeled scenarios of future terrestrial ice melt.

Prediction of Arctic Sea Ice Concentration Using a Fully Data Driven Deep Neural Network

open access: yesRemote Sensing, 2017
The Arctic sea ice is an important indicator of the progress of global warming and climate change. Prediction of Arctic sea ice concentration has been investigated by many disciplines and predictions have been made using a variety of methods.

Wave–sea-ice interactions in a brittle rheological framework [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2021
As sea ice extent decreases in the Arctic, surface ocean waves have more time and space to develop and grow, exposing the marginal ice zone (MIZ) to more frequent and more energetic wave events.
