Using Recycled Materials in a Novel Dual Binder System for Hard Carbon Anodes: Closing the Loop Toward Sustainable Li‐/Na‐ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The study explores for the first time the use of polyvinyl butyral (PVB), particularly recycled PVB, as a sustainable binder for Li/Na‐based electrodes in the framework of the H2020 SUNRISE EU project. Findings revealed that electrodes bound with a sustainable PAA/PVB mixture demonstrated exceptional rate capability and high initial Coulombic ...

Suitability of the CICE sea ice model for seasonal prediction and positive impact of CryoSat-2 ice thickness initialization [PDF]

open access: yesThe Cryosphere
The Los Alamos Community Ice CodE (CICE) sea ice model is being tested in standalone mode to identify biases that limit its suitability for seasonal prediction, where it is driven by atmospheric forcings from the NCEP Climate Forecast System Reanalysis ...

Impact of the Ice Strength Formulation on the Performance of a Sea Ice Thickness Distribution Model in the Arctic

open access: yes, 2017
The impact of a subgrid-scale ice thickness distribution (ITD) and two standard ice strength formulations on simulated Arctic sea ice climate is investigated.

Iridium Oxide Inverse Opal Anodes with Tailored Porosity for Efficient PEM Electrolysis

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The synthesis of Iridium‐based Inverse Opals (Ir‐IO) is reported as electrocatalyst for Proton exchange membrane water electrolysis (PEM‐WE). Using the developed protocol it produces highly porous materials consisting either of metallic, oxidic Iridium or a combination thereof with large surface areas.

Benefits of assimilating thin sea ice thickness from SMOS into the TOPAZ system

open access: yesThe Cryosphere, 2016
. An observation product for thin sea ice thickness (SMOS-Ice) is derived from the brightness temperature data of the European Space Agency's (ESA) Soil Moisture and Ocean Salinity (SMOS) mission.

Enhancing Low‐Temperature Performance of Sodium‐Ion Batteries via Anion‐Solvent Interactions

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
DOL is introduced into electrolytes as a co‐solvent, increasing slat solubility, ion conductivity, and the de‐solvent process, and forming an anion‐rich solvent shell due to its high interaction with anion. With the above virtues, the batteries using this electrolyte exhibit excellent cycling stability at low temperatures. Abstract Sodium‐ion batteries

Comparison of Arctic sea ice thickness and snow depth estimates from CFSR with in situ observations

open access: yesClimate Dynamics, 2017
Sea ice growth is modulated by snow cover, and understanding this relationship requires an accurate determination of snow depth. However, a lack of in situ measurements complicates understanding of the interaction of snow depth with sea ice growth.

Bacteria‐Derived Extracellular Vesicle as A “Trojan Horse” for Selective M1 Macrophage‐Targeting in A Multi‐Cellular Entanglement Environment

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The temporary transition of macrophages from a pro‐inflammatory phenotype of macrophages (M1) to an anti‐inflammatory phenotype of macrophages (M2) is crucial for tissue repair and regeneration processes. Bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs) are utilized as a “trojan horse” for specific M1 macrophage‐targeting and anti‐inflammatory drug delivery ...

Pancake Ice Thickness Mapping in the Beaufort Sea From Wave Dispersion Observed in SAR Imagery

open access: yes, 2018
The early autumn voyage of RV Sikuliaq to the southern Beaufort Sea in 2015 offered very favorable opportunities for observing the properties and thicknesses of frazil-pancake ice types. The operational region was overlaid by a dense network of retrieved
