Altimeter Estimation of Sea Surface Wind Stress for Light to Moderate Winds [PDF]
Aircraft altimeter and in situ measurements are used to examine relationships between altimeter backscatter and the magnitude of near-surface wind and friction velocities. Comparison of altimeter radar cross section with wind speed is made through the modified Chelton-Wentz algorithm.

ENSO effect on the sea surface wind and sea surface temperature in the Taiwan Strait [PDF]
The ERS scatterometer and NOAA/AVHRR data during 1996/4–2000/12 are used to examine the variations of the sea surface wind and sea surface temperature (SST) in the Taiwan Strait (TS) through Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis. It is found that the sea surface wind in the TS is southwesterly in summer but northeasterly in the other seasons ...

Roughness Change Analysis of Sea Surface From Visible Images by Fractals
This paper presents an analysis of sea surface roughness from visible images based on fractals features for the first time. We measure fractal dimensions of sea surface images by the methods of box counting, fractional Brownian motion, and area ...

Parametric Estimation of the Stochastic Dynamics of Sea Surface Winds [PDF]
Abstract In this study, the parameters of a stochastic–dynamical model of sea surface winds are estimated from long time series of sea surface wind observational data. The model was introduced by A. H. Monahan, who developed an idealized model from a highly simplified representation of the momentum budget of a surface atmospheric layer ...

Derivation of Sea Surface Wind Directions from TerraSAR-X Data Using the Local Gradient Method
Derivation of sea surface wind direction is a key step of sea surface wind retrieval from spaceborne Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) data. This technical note describes an implementation of the Local Gradient (LG) method to derive sea surface wind ...

A relation between the wind friction velocity and the sea surface microwave scattering
A simple recursive algorithm for the estimation of the friction velocity as a function of the air-sea temperature difference and the wind speed measured at 10-m height above the sea surface, without needing of drag coefficient, is presented.

The Impact of Surface Waves and Spray Injection Velocities on Air–Sea Momentum and Heat Fluxes
Surface waves and sea spray play a significant role in air–sea fluxes in high winds. The present study used a marine atmosphere surface layer (MASL), which couples the traditional Monin–Obukhov similarity theory, sea spray generation function, the ...

Sea Surface Wind Retrievals from SIR-C/X-SAR Data: A Revisit
The Geophysical Model Function (GMF) XMOD1 provides a linear algorithm for sea surface wind field retrievals for the Spaceborne Imaging Radar-C/X-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SIR-C/X-SAR).

Wind Direction Retrieval Using Support Vector Machine from CYGNSS Sea Surface Data
In view of the difficulty of wind direction retrieval in the case of the large space and time span of the global sea surface, a method of sea surface wind direction retrieval using a support vector machine (SVM) is proposed.
