A SAR Cross-Pol Correlation Sea Surface Wind Speed Study
IGARSS 2018 - 2018 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2018A new study based on the complex and amplitude cross-pol correlation is made. It exploits Sentinel-1 Single Look Complex (SLC) SAR and reference HSCAT wind data. The behavior of these two polarimetric features vs wind speed is analyzed. Low-to-moderate and high wind speed regimes are considered.

Revisiting dependences of the drag coefficient at the sea surface on wind speed and sea state
Continental Shelf Research, 2020Abstract Accurate representation of wind stress is important for modelling and predictions of marine environmental conditions. The effect of sea state on wind stress is usually parameterized by relating the equivalent sea surface roughness to the wave age or wave steepness. In this study, a new parameterization is presented for the dependences of sea

Sea Surface Wind Speed Estimation
2021One of the most useful applications of GNSS-R is the measurement of speed of sea surface wind, especially the tropical cyclone, Typhoon, or Hurricane. Precise measurement and prediction of these disastrous winds is very important to timely warning and thus to avoiding or reducing the loss of economy and life.

Variation of the sea surface drag coefficient with wind speed
Quarterly Journal of the Royal Meteorological Society, 1975AbstractEddy correlation measurements of wind turbulence obtained at a sand spit on Sable Island, Nova Scotia, in winds ranging from gentle breeze to strong gale force agree with other recent measurements over water. There is a significant increase in the drag coefficient with wind speed which is well described by the equation of Charnock (1955).

Sea surface wind speed inversion using low incident NRCS
2016 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2016As the launch of radars, such as the Precipitation Radar (PR) on Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM)[1] satellite and the Surface Wave Investigation and Monitoring (SWIM) on China France Oceanography SATellite (CFOSAT)[2], that operate in low incident angles, more and more NRCS data at low incident angle will be obtained.

Sea surface wind speed estimation based on GNSS signal measurements
2012 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2012In this paper we investigate near sea surface wind speed estimation using GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) signals. A low-altitude airborne experiment was conducted recently using a UNSW-owned light aircraft over the coast of Sydney. Both direct and reflected signals were captured via a zenith-looking antenna and a nadir-looking antenna ...

Long-term variations in a sea surface wind speed (WS) and a significant wave height (SWH) are associated with the global climate change, the prevention and mitigation of natural disasters, and an ocean resource exploitation, and other activities. The seasonal characteristics of the long-term trends in China’s seas WS and SWH are determined based on 24 ...

Retrieval of Sea Surface Wind Speed by Spaceborne SAR Based on Machine Learning
IGARSS 2020 - 2020 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium, 2020In this paper, we presented a preliminary study of retrieving sea surface wind speed (SSWS) from the Senitnel-1 SAR data acquired in Horizontal-Horizontal (HH) polarization based on a machine learning algorithm, to acquire wind field over Arctic ocean with high spatial resolution and accuracy.

Sea surface wind speed estimation by using HY-2A scatterometer wind and ocean ambient noise
2017 IEEE International Conference on Signal Processing, Communications and Computing (ICSPCC), 2017According to the fundamental mechanisms and recent research results of wind-generated noise, a novel method was proposed that the sea surface wind speed was estimated by using HY-2A microwave scatterometer(HY-2A/SCAT) wind and ocean ambient noise. In this research, the ambient noise data measured by subsurface buoy and HY-2A/SCAT wind in China south ...

Empirical Models of the Probability Distribution of Sea Surface Wind Speeds
Journal of Climate, 2007Abstract This study considers the probability distribution of sea surface wind speeds, which have historically been modeled using the Weibull distribution. First, non-Weibull structure in the observed sea surface wind speeds (from SeaWinds observations) is characterized using relative entropy, a natural information theoretic measure of ...
