Vanishing Horizontal Sea Surface Temperature Gradients at Low Wind Speeds

Boundary-Layer Meteorology, 2004
Sea surface temperature (SST) is a result of multiple interactions in air-sea processes. During days with strong insolation and low wind speed, there may be uneven net heating of the water layer near the surface of the ocean, when there are horizontal temperature gradients at the sea surface.

Data fusion of sea surface wind speed from multisatellite altimeters

SPIE Proceedings, 2013
Satellite altimeters are widely used in the research of ocean dynamics. Data fusion methods such as Kriging method, successive correction method and inverse distance to a power method are used in this paper, and the appropriate parameters for these methods are achieved for the fusion of sea surface wind speed (SSW) data from GFO, Jason-1, Jason-2 and ...

Wind Speed Measurement From Below The Sea Surface By Correlation

SPIE Proceedings, 1984
The angular aspect of optical radiation transmitted throuyn the air-sea interface depends upon the effective slope of the particular element of sea surface illuminated at that particular instant of time. Waves and swells strongly effect the resultant rauiance distribution below the surface, by focusing and dispersing small light ray bundles, The air ...

Ozone deposition to the sea surface: chemical enhancement and wind speed dependence

Atmospheric Environment, 2004
Abstract Deposition of ozone to the sea surface is controlled by complex physical and chemical processes. There is a large variability in the observed deposition velocity of ozone v d needed to be better characterized. In addition, the existing formulations for estimating ( v d ) cannot explain a significant ozone loss, particularly, at low wind ...

Wind speed forcing of the bulk-skin sea surface temperature difference

IGARSS'97. 1997 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium Proceedings. Remote Sensing - A Scientific Vision for Sustainable Development, 2002
Recent studies (Wick, 1995; Donlon and Robinson, 1996) have shown that at high wind speeds the difference between bulk and skin sea surface temperature (/spl Delta/T) is constant at -0.1 K and there is no further dependence of /spl Delta/T on wind speed.

Coefficients for sea surface wind stress, heat flux, and wind profiles as a function of wind speed and temperature

Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 1988
Surface layer coefficients for wind profiles, wind stress, and heat flux in typical open sea conditions are briefly reviewed. Businger‐Dyer flux‐gradient relationships and a Charnock wind stress formula fit the empirical data and are dimensionally consistent. These have been solved by an iterative method, and the results are presented in a tabular form

Doppler-scatterometer for a sea state and near surface wind speed determination

IEEE 1999 International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium. IGARSS'99 (Cat. No.99CH36293), 2003
A Doppler-scatterometer system is developed for the determination of near sea surface wind speed and the difference of near surface air and water temperatures.

A Method for Estimating the Reduction Factor Between the Maximum Sea Surface Wind Speed of a Typhoon and the Wind Speed at Flight Altitude

To overcome the challenge of converting aircraft reconnaissance winds to near-surface typhoon winds, this paper presents a hybrid method combining physics and empirical relations. Aloft, using the WISHE theory and the assumption of moist adiabatic ascent, the gradient wind at a target pressure level (e.g., 700 hPa) is solved based on
