Sea urchin granuloma is a chronic focal response to the puncture of sea urchin spines, induced by the permanence of prickle remnants in the wound. Until recent years, it was thought to represent a foreign body reaction but, following the description, in 2001, of its several histologic forms, the spectrum of its likely pathogenetic mechanisms has ...

Publisher Summary From the first demonstration that the mitotic apparatus could be isolated as a discrete entity, to the identification of the colchicine-binding protein, tubulin, to the purification of an mRNA-polyribosome-microtubule complex, sea urchin eggs and embryos have been a model system for the study of microtubule formation and function ...

In the sea urchin morphogenesis follows extensive molecular specification. The specification controls the many morphogenetic events and these, in turn, precede patterning steps that establish the larval body plan. To understand how the embryo is built it was necessary to understand those series of molecular steps.

Summary The dominant paradigm of top-down control of ecological communities through direct consumption pathways is giving way to a more nuanced understanding of trophic interactions with the recognition that subtler indirect effects can often play an ...

Arylsulfatase of sea urchin sperm
Developmental Biology, 1980Abstract An arylsulfatase is defined as a lysin of sea urchin sperm from the following evidences. (1) The activity is detected in the sperm of all the sea urchins investigated, and the activity is partially liberated from the cells after the acrosome reaction ( Moriya and Hoshi, 1979 ).

Abstract Immunology is a very important subject and has important consequences for sea urchins in the field and in culture and also in the selection of the wild populations, especially because the sea urchin adults have limited capacity of moving when the environment changes, although dispersal by larvae is possible.

Molecular analysis of gut microflora in captive-raised sea urchins (Lytechinus variegatus).
, 2010In the USA, sea urchin aquaculture is in its infancy. One concern with current captive culture involves maintaining roe, or “uni,” quality. Diet of cultured urchins has been shown to affect roe quality. Sea urchins have a unique digestive system and lack

Abstract The echinoid skeleton provides numerous characters that are useful for phylogenetic reconstruction, allowing broad integration of fossil and extant data. During the last 50 years echinoid research has strongly profited from the advent of cladistics, considerably improving our knowledge of the evolution of sea urchins.

Carotenoids are a source of vitamin A and natural colorants of food and feed. Many marine animals are colored. Much of the coloration is because of the presence of carotenoid as well as melanin, porphyrin, ommochrome, quinones, and bile pigments. Carotenoids are widely distributed, naturally occurring pigments, usually red, orange or yellow in color ...
