Seabed classification using a single beam echosounder
OCEANS 2015 - Genova, 2015Analysis of seabed features with acoustic devices is an active field of research and permits to define parameters suitable to build a classification method useful to recognize different kinds of seabed. The aim of the paper is to give a preliminary description of a method to identify the presence of Posidonia on the seabed based on the analysis of raw ...

Seabed Classification Based on SOFM Neural Network
2008 International Conference on Computer Science and Software Engineering, 2008The multibeam bathymetric system (MBS) can provide both sounding data and acoustic backscattering strength data. Using the latter, Seabed classification can be fulfilled. This paper presents a method of seabed classification based on self-organizing feature maps (SOFM) neural network.

Seabed topographic classification and mapping
OCEANS 96 MTS/IEEE Conference Proceedings. The Coastal Ocean - Prospects for the 21st Century, 2002The Naval Oceanographic Office (NAVOCEANO), in response to the Chief of Naval Operations' and Commandant of the Marine Corps' white papers entitled "...From the Sea" and "Forward...From the Sea", has focused its effort on providing the fleet with environmental data gleaned from the littoral ocean regions.

Developing multiscale terrain signatures for seabed classification
2021<p>It is increasingly recognized that environmental variables must be considered at multiple spatial scales to produce maps of the seabed that better capture and represent geomorphic features and marine habitats. In this paper, the ability of new multiscale geomorphometric variables to classify different types of seabed habitats is tested.

Multiple-sensor fusion approach to seabed classification
The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2008Seabed classification is key issue for civilian and military underwater applications, from offshore exploitation to mine counter measure. Most of the existing automated classification techniques relies on the analysis of the data provided by a single sensor, supposed to unambiguously separate the different classes of seabed.

Reproducibility of single-beam acoustic seabed classification
OCEANS 2009, 2009Single-beam acoustic seabed classification continues to be a popular method for mapping seabeds and their sediments. Modern methods can generate maps of acoustic classes that are useful and reasonably accurate. Research toward improved methods continues.

Comparison of multisensor fusion methods for seabed classification
Europe Oceans 2005, 2005Automatic seabed classification can be achieved using acoustic sensors but methods need to be improved. In order to get better classification reliability, we propose to use complementarity between sidescan sonar images and a digital elevation models (DEM).

A novel visual classification method of seabed sediments
2014 Oceans - St. John's, 2014This study aims at the autonomous seafloor surveillance by underwater vehicles based on computer vision techniques. A novel scheme of seabed image classification is proposed to identify three types of seabed sediments. The texture features of seabed sediments were described by using gray-level co-occurrence matrix and fractal dimension.

The Discussion of Acoustic Seabed Sediment Classification Methods
Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2012Acoustic seabed sediment classification method is always important research contents in marine geology and marine acoustics because of its characters of low-cost and high efficiency. At present, there are mainly three types of acoustic seabed sediment classification methods:(1) the echo signal statistical characteristics classification; (2) image ...

Benthic habitat mapping with acoustic seabed classification
MTS/IEEE Oceans 2001. An Ocean Odyssey. Conference Proceedings (IEEE Cat. No.01CH37295), 2002Thematic maps of acoustic diversity resulting from acoustical seabed classification surveys are usually presented as track lines of color-coded classes. These classes can later be calibrated using a bottom sampling system and, perhaps, underwater video or biological sampling.
