Fault Migration and Basin Evolution During Complex Rifting: Examples From the Western North Gulf of Evia, Greece

open access: yesBasin Research, Volume 38, Issue 4, July–August 2026.
The Western Basin of the North Gulf of Evia rift is a complex, normal fault‐controlled basin. In this study we develop the first pre‐Holocene syn‐kinematic age model here and apply it to better understand rift evolution, basin control, and timing of fault migration in the active rift.

The role of shallow banks and marine ice domes in marine‐based ice‐sheet deglaciation

open access: yesBoreas
Marine‐based ice sheets are susceptible to collapse and faster retreat than their land‐terminating counterparts. One of the key factors contributing to the relative stability of marine‐terminating ice sheets is the presence of shallow bathymetric banks ...

A review of the historic and present ecological role of aquatic and shoreline wood, from forest to deep sea

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1091-1119, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The ecology of forests, their losses, and terrestrial wood decomposition dynamics have been intensively studied and reviewed. In the aquatic realm, reviews have concentrated on large wood (LW) in rivers and the transition from freshwater to marine environments in the Pacific Northwest of North America. However, a comprehensive global synthesis

Environmental and Protection Effects of Shark‐Companion Associations Across Three Ocean Basins

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 6, June 2026.
Companion species frequently associate with large marine hosts, yet the ecological drivers of these relationships remain poorly understood. Using a global dataset of midwater BRUVS deployments, we modelled the presence and abundance of shark‐companion associations across seven shark species and three ocean basins.

Multi-parameter coupling effects on plume morphology and pockmark development induced by submarine shallow gas leakage

open access: yesFrontiers in Marine Science
Plumes and pockmarks are formed when shallow gas breaches the seabed and infiltrates into ocean currents, disrupting the original ecological environment and affecting biological habitats and migration behaviors.

Remote reefs and seamounts are the last refuges for marine predators across the Indo-Pacific.

open access: yesPLoS Biology, 2019
Since the 1950s, industrial fisheries have expanded globally, as fishing vessels are required to travel further afield for fishing opportunities. Technological advancements and fishery subsidies have granted ever-increasing access to populations of ...

Low sediment retention efficiency limits delta formation in tectonically confined high‐energy coastal systems

open access: yesEarth Surface Processes and Landforms, Volume 51, Issue 6, June 2026.
Conceptual framework showing how tectonic confinement, steep monsoon‐driven river dynamics, high‐energy coastal processes and offshore sediment dispersal together limit sediment retention at the Narmada–Tapi river mouths, suppressing sustained subaerial delta formation despite high sediment supply. Abstract Although deltaic growth is commonly linked to

Seabed geomorphology of the Prokljan Lake – a Krka River estuary on the eastern Adriatic coast (Dalmatia)

open access: yes, 2021
Vast areas of the shallow Adriatic shelf were exposed at the time of the Last Glacial Maximum lowstand. This enabled formation of lakes, river valleys and river floodplains that were submerged during the Holocene transgression. Here we present a study of the karst estuary of the Krka River located in central Dalmatia on the eastern Adriatic coast.

Identifying community-driven priority questions in acoustic backscatter research

open access: yesFrontiers in Remote Sensing
IntroductionRemotely-sensed acoustic backscatter is an indispensable tool for seabed mapping, among other disciplines. Almost a decade after the GeoHab Backscatter Working Group published its guidelines and recommendations report, new technologies, new ...

Reconstructing Multibeam Echosounder Bathymetry with Generative Adversarial Networks: Toward Efficient Use of Survey Resources [PDF]

open access: yesISPRS Annals of the Photogrammetry, Remote Sensing and Spatial Information Sciences
The spatial accuracy and resolution of Multibeam Echosounder data are inherently lower than those of high-resolution underwater LiDAR measurements. However, while Multibeam Echosounder provides wide coverage and extensive historical availability, LiDAR ...
