The Nippon Foundation—GEBCO Seabed 2030 Project: The Quest to See the World’s Oceans Completely Mapped by 2030

open access: yesGeosciences, 2018
Despite many of years of mapping effort, only a small fraction of the world ocean’s seafloor has been sampled for depth, greatly limiting our ability to explore and understand critical ocean and seafloor processes.

Making the First National Seafloor Habitat Map

open access: yesEos, 2019
Seamap Australia integrates seafloor maps with information on plant and animal habitats, environmental stressors, and resource management to create a first-of-its-kind resource.

Acoustic signatures of the seafloor: Tools for predicting grouper habitat [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Groupers are important components of commercial and recreational fisheries. Current methods of diver-based grouper census surveys could potentially benefit from development of remotely sensed methods of seabed classification.

Environmental Drivers of Jumbo Squid During Fishery Collapse in the Gulf of California (2019–2024)

open access: yesFisheries Oceanography, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The jumbo squid (Dosidicus gigas) is a cephalopod endemic to the eastern Pacific with significant ecological and economic importance. Its exploitation in the Gulf of California (GC) peaked in the 1990s, with catches exceeding 100,000 tons, but collapsed in 2009 and virtually disappeared by 2015, largely due to environmental changes and ...

Imaging Point Source Groundwater Discharges in a Confined Coastal Aquifer Using Electrical Resistivity

open access: yesGroundwater, EarlyView.
Marine electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) is applied to characterize point‐source submarine groundwater discharge (PSGD) along NW Yucatán. ERT observations and forward modeling constrain conduit detectability under varying hydrogeological conditions.

In-situ sedimentary evidence of complex bottom currents at a modern deepwater seamount

open access: yesCommunications Earth & Environment
Interactions between deep-ocean currents and seafloor sediments create bedforms that are important for paleoenvironment reconstructions, resource exploration, and mapping ecosystems.

Geohazard features of the Aeolian Island slopes and the North-Eastern Sicily offshore

open access: yesJournal of Maps
The MaGIC project (Marine Geohazard along the Italian Coasts) had the aim of mapping the geohazard in the Italian seas and resulted in the production of numerous maps covering parts of the Italian Seas.

Assessment of habitat representation across a network of marine protected areas with implications for the spatial design of monitoring.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Networks of marine protected areas (MPAs) are being adopted globally to protect ecosystems and supplement fisheries management. The state of California recently implemented a coast-wide network of MPAs, a statewide seafloor mapping program, and ...

Seafloor mapping from high-density satellite altimetry

open access: yesMarine Geophysical Researches, 1996
In this paper, we publish the results of a bathymetry survey based on the processing of satellite altimetry data. Data gathered from GEOSAT (Geodetic Mission), SEASAT, ERS-1 and TOPEX/POSEIDON satellites were processed to recover the seafloor topography over new seamounts in a test area located in the south central Pacific.

Time dependent seafloor acoustic backscatter (10-100kHz) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
A time-dependent model of the acoustic intensity backscattered by the seafloor is described and compared with data from a calibrated, vertically oriented, echo-sounder operating at 33 and 93 kHz.
