Arteriovenous anastomoses in the skin of seals. I. The Weddell seal Leptonychotes weddelli and the elephant seal Mirounga leonina (Pinnipedia: Phocidae)

The Anatomical Record, 1978
AbstractThe structure, distribution, density and innervation of arteri‐ovenous anastomoses (AVAs) have been compared in the skin of Weddell and elephant seals, as part of a study of the structure and function of arteriovenous anastomoses in mammals. In both genera AVAs were coiled vessels with the segmental structure typical of “epithelioid” anastomoses

Anisakids (Nematoda: Anisakidae) from ringed seal, Pusa hispida, and bearded seal, Erignathus barbatus (Mammalia: Pinnipedia) from Nunavut region

Journal of the Marine Biological Association of the United Kingdom, 2013
As many Arctic fish species are intermediate hosts of anisakids, they are present in the diet of the ringed seal, Pusa hispida, and the bearded seal, Erignathus barbatus. Parasitic nematodes from the stomachs of 66 seals caught in the Nunavut region (Canada) from two communities (Arviat and Sanikiluaq) from October 2007 to January 2008 have been ...

Growth and condition in Australian fur seals ( Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus ) (Carnivora : Pinnipedia)

Australian Journal of Zoology, 2002
Mass and length growth models were determined for male ( n = 69) and female ( n = 163) Australian fur seals ( Arctocephalus pusillus doriferus ) collected at a breeding colony on Seal Rocks (38°31'S, 145°06'E), Bass Strait, in south-east Australia, between February and November during 1970–72.

Cow-Pup Behaviour of the Weddell Seal, Leptonychotes Weddelli (Pinnipedia), in Mcmurdo Sound, Antarctica.

Wildlife Research, 1979
Study was of the behaviour of 9 marked female Weddell seals, Leptonychotes weddelli, and their young in a colony of 35 to 40 such pairs at Turtle Rock, McMurdo Sound, off Ross Island, Antarctica. The young sucked first about 80 min after birth. Sucking was usually initiated by the young seal, which had to raise its head to reach either of the 2 nipples.

The mammary gland of the weddell seal, Leptonychotes weddelli (Pinnipedia). I. Gross and microscopic anatomy

The Anatomical Record, 1981
AbstractThe Weddell seal cow possesses two subcutaneous, ellipsoidal, abdominal mammary glands with a volume of two to three liters when lactating. Corrosion casts reveal that approximately ten large ducts radiate from a gland cistern at the base of the nipple, and end in a complex system of terminal branches. Each gland has a separate arterial supply,

Digeneans of northern fur seals Callorhinus ursinus (Pinnipedia: Otariidae) from five subpopulations on St. Paul Island, Alaska

Parasitology Research, 2018
A parasitological survey of 651 northern fur seals Callorhinus ursinus L. from five subpopulations was conducted on St. Paul Island, Alaska, during July-August 2012-2014. Digenean trematodes were found in 210 of 651 fur seals with a total prevalence of 32.3%. Intensity of infection varied from 1 to 1540 parasites with mean intensity 18.4 ± 111.1 SD and

Prevalence of Brucella pinnipediae in healthy hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) from the North Atlantic Ocean and ringed seals (Phoca hispida) from Svalbard

Veterinary Microbiology, 2005
Investigations for Brucella-infections were conducted in 29 hooded seals (Cystophora cristata) caught between Svalbard and Greenland (North Atlantic Ocean; Greenland Sea) autumn 2002, and from 20 ringed seals (Phoca hispida) caught in Billefjord, Svalbard, spring 2003.

The Diving Behavior of Adult Male and Female Southern Elephant Seals, Mirounga-Leonina (Pinnipedia, Phocidae)

Australian Journal of Zoology, 1991
Over 50 000 individual dive records collected by time-depth recorders were analysed with respect to sex of the seal, time of year and the approximate geographic location of the dive. Six distinct dive types were described on the basis of parameters such as the amount of time spent at the maximum depth of the dive, the rate of ascent and descent, and ...

The fibromuscular basket (sporta perimedullaris musculosa) in renculi of kidneys from the ringed seal, Phoca hispida (Pinnipedia)

Journal of Morphology, 1986
AbstractThe medulla of renculi from kidneys of Ringed seals (Phoca hispida) is completely enclosed by cortex except at the hilum. Within the renculus, the fibromuscular coat of the calyx separates from the transitional epithelium at the level of the corticomedullary junction, where the intrarencular arteries also diverge into the parenchyma.
