A Study of the Penetration of Sealants into Pits and Fissures

Journal of the American Dental Association, 1973
An investigation was conducted into the penetration of different resin sealants into the pits and fissures of extracted molariform teeth of humans. The results showed that prophylaxis before conditioning and sealant placement only cleaned the cuspal inclined planes and that pits and fissures often remained filled with debris.

Microleakage and penetration of a hydrophilic sealant and a conventional resin‐based sealant as a function of preparation techniques: a laboratory study

open access: yesInternational Journal of Paediatric Dentistry, 2012
International Journal of Paediatric Dentistry 2013; 23: 13–22 Background.  Optimal pit and fissure sealing is determined by surface preparation techniques and choice of materials.Aim.  This study aimed (i) to compare the microleakage and penetration depth of a hydrophilic sealant and a conventional resin‐based sealant using one of the following ...

Comparison of sealant and infiltrant penetration into pit and fissure caries lesions in vitro

Journal of Dentistry, 2014
The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the penetration of an infiltrant and a sealant, when applied as recommended, into fissure caries lesions. The fissure systems of extracted human teeth were classified according to the international caries detection and assessment system (ICDAS, codes: 0, 1, 2).

The effect of fissure morphology and pretreatment of the enamel surface on penetration and adhesion of fissure sealants

Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, 1996
summary Fissure sealants have been used successfully as a means of preventing fissure caries. This effectiveness is directly related to sealant retention and retention is dependent upon a meticulous method of application. The aims of this study were to determine if sealant adhesion and penetration were affected by the variation in preparation of ...

Penetration ability and microleakage of a fissure sealant applied on artificial and natural enamel fissure caries

open access: yesJournal of Dentistry, 2007
OBJECTIVES AND METHODS: This study investigated the sealing ability of a current available unfilled fissure sealant applied over sound (n=80), artificially created (n=80) and naturally carious fissures (n=80) under different humidity conditions (90+/-2 ...

Effect of surface-penetrating sealant on composite wear

Dental Materials, 1993
The wear resistance of posterior composites has improved dramatically over the last several years. Compared to the original formulations, many of the currently available composites exhibit wear rates of less than 10% of their early predecessors. Nevertheless, much research has been directed toward improving this property to a higher level.

Radon Penetration of Concrete Slab Cracks, Joints, Pipe Penetrations, and Sealants

Health Physics, 1997
Radon movement through 12 test slabs with different cracks, pipe penetrations, cold joints, masonry blocks, sealants, and tensile stresses characterized the importance of these anomalous structural domains. Diffusive and advective radon transport were measured with steady-state air pressure differences controlled throughout the deltaP = 0 to 60 Pa ...

Assessing the Long-Term Effect of a Surface Penetrating Sealant

The Journal of the American Dental Association, 1993
Small defects are commonly found on the surfaces of composite restorations--especially in stress-bearing areas. Sealant application may reduce the wear rates of these restorations. This five-year study assesses the effect of sealant application on interfacial staining, clinical wear, marginal integrity and surface texture.
