Renewable Resource Management with Stock Externalities: Coastal Aquifers and Submarine Groundwater Discharge [PDF]

open access: yes
This paper develops a hydrologic-ecologic-economic model of groundwater use. Particularly, we model coastal groundwater management and its effects on submarine groundwater discharge, nearshore marine water quality, and marine biota.

Influence of osmotic energy recovery/osmotic dilution on seawater desalination energy demand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Supplying fresh, potable water to an ever increasing world population is becoming a major challenge. One possibility is to produce fresh water from seawater by Reverse Osmosis (RO), a process that is very energy intensive.

Modeling Zero‐Gap Saltwater Electrolysis With Advective Flow Through a Thin‐Film Composite Membrane

open access: yesChemSusChem, Volume 19, Issue 3, February 2026.
During saltwater electrolysis with a thin‐film composite membrane, ion and water transport are coupled. The direction of water flux follows that of the dominant salt ion carrying charge. When Na+ transport from the anode to the cathode is dominant, fluid flow occurs in the same direction.

Assessing the suitability of desalination techniques for hydraulic barriers

open access: yesnpj Clean Water
Seawater intrusion is a worldwide increasing challenge, which lowers the freshwater availability by salination of fresh groundwater resources in coastal areas. The abstraction-desalination-recharge (ADR) methodology can combat seawater intrusion, whereby

Achieving Transboundary Water Security Through Water Innovations: A Framework and Cases

open access: yesWorld Water Policy, Volume 12, Issue 1, February 2026.
ABSTRACT Alternative sources of freshwater, provided by various innovations, have long been available to countries facing acute water stress. We hypothesize that avoiding and/or resolving conflict with neighbors—caused by the uncertainty of continued access to shared surface water and groundwater sources—is another driver of innovation adoption ...
