Characterization Experiments of Secondary Arcs on Solar Arrays: Secondary Arc Physical Parameters
Journal of Spacecraft and Rockets, 2014Secondary arcs on solar arrays are a serious threat to the safety of spacecraft operation. Experiments to characterize secondary arcs are currently being conducted. In this study, the effect of external capacitance in the test circuit on the transition from a primary discharge to secondary is investigated.

Secondary arcing in space environment
2015 IEEE International Conference on Plasma Sciences (ICOPS), 2015Secondary arc initiation in the electrical distribution (ED) of spacecrafts (SC) is much sensitive to the SC environment and a kind of primary discharge. Standard procedures on secondary arc tests imply electrostatic discharge (ESD) as an only source of arcing. However, the problem of secondary arcing is actual also in equipment where ESD has no chance

The protection of the environment requires compact EHV tower constructions. This trend results in decreasing the clearances and phase-to-phase distances. It is expected, that both the number of faults and the amplitude of the secondary arc current will grow in the future.

Mitigation of Secondary Arcing in Spacecraft Electronic Equipment
IEEE Transactions on Aerospace and Electronic Systems, 2019Here we present experimental data that demonstrate the possibility to detect defects in protective dielectrics covering printed circuit boards (PCBs) and to prevent secondary arcing after primary arc events. The detection of defects in a PCB is based on its plasma scanning and measurements of plasma-to-PCB electron currents through defects, allowing ...

Long arcs in free air: Stationary parameters for secondary arc current range
2014 Power Systems Computation Conference, 2014The major part of disturbs in electrical systems occurs in transmission lines. These disturbs are in most cases single-phase and transitory and mainly caused by atmospheric electrical discharges. In this paper, the voltage-current cross relation characteristic of the secondary arc was investigated using open air experimental data.

A triggering mechanism for secondary arcs (railguns)
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1993It is postulated that there is local change in the magnetic field, associated with the rail joint connections, which causes a variation in the breech voltage and in the J*B force applied to the armature. Experimental data suggest that this change in force can trigger secondary arcs.

Secondary arc formation and evolution in railguns
1990 Plasma Science IEEE Conference Record - Abstracts, 1990Summary form only given. A computational code based on simple models has been developed as an aid to understanding the complex physical processes which promote the formation of secondary arcs and control their evolution in plasma armature railguns.

Comparison of secondary arcs for reclosing applications
IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation, 2017This paper presents a comparison of secondary electric arcs behavior for reclosing applications. The main objective of the paper is to show the differences in secondary arcs during simulations, laboratory tests and real life events. These comparisons can help engineers develop adaptive reclosing algorithms and improve power system stability. A software

Secondary arc dynamics in a railgun bore
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1999We have conducted a series of experiments on the growth of secondary arcs in railgun bores. The experimental results indicate that the secondary arc grows bigger as the stored energy of the capacitor bank becomes higher and as the diameter of the railgun bore decreases.
