Role of plant functional traits in determining vegetation composition of abandoned grazing land in north-eastern Victoria, Australia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Question: In the Northern Hemisphere, species with dispersal limitations are typically absent from secondary forests. In Australia, little is known about dispersal mechanisms and other traits that drive species composition within post-agricultural ...

Preliminary assessment of beetle diversity in a fragmented landscape of the Ecuadorian tropical dry forest

open access: yesRevista Peruana de Biología
Landscape alterations may affect beetle assemblages wherein sensitive species can disappear, and highly adapted species populations can increase. Beetle diversity in a restored forest and cropland was assessed in the tropical dry forest of Ecuador ...

Hunting for Sustainability in Tropical Secondary Forests

open access: yesConservation Biology, 2009
Abstract:  The interaction between land‐use change and the sustainability of hunting is poorly understood but is critical for sustaining hunted vertebrate populations and a protein supply for the rural poor.

First record of Dendroctonus micans (Kugelann, 1794) on non-native spruces in Slovakia - short communication

open access: yesPlant Protection Science, 2016
In 2015, we recorded the first attack of the great spruce bark beetle, Dendroctonus micans (Kugelann) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae, Scolytinae) on non-native Picea orientalis (L.) and Picea pungens (Engelmann) in Slovakia.

The Diversity and Abundance of Springtail (Collembola) on Forests and Smallholder in Jambi [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Soils, 2015
Harapan forests is the first restoration forest in Indonesia, includes several different ecosystems. Different ecosystems have different characteristic to affect the diversity and abundance of Collembola.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Woody plant communities of isolated Afromontane cloud forests in Taita Hills, Kenya [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
In the Taita Hills in southern Kenya, remnants of the original Afromontane forest vegetation are restricted to isolated mountain peaks. To assess the level of degradation and the need for forest restoration, we examined how forest plant communities and ...

Interaction of HS1BP3 with cortactin modulates TKS5 localisation, cell secretion and cancer malignancy

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Here, we demonstrate that HS1BP3 interacts with Cortactin through a proline‐rich region (PRR3.1) and show that this interaction, and HS1BP3 itself, promote cancer cell proliferation and invasion. Inhibition of this interaction leads to build‐up of TKS5 in multivesicular endosomes and altered secretion of CD63 and CD9, providing an explanation for the ...

Recovery of soil macrofauna in Amazonian secondary forests is driven by vegetation complexity rather than fallow age alone

open access: yesFrontiers in Forests and Global Change
In the Amazon, shifting cultivation has historically shaped the landscape and remains a key land-use system practiced by traditional communities. The ecological sustainability of this system depends on the regeneration capacity of forests between ...

Ecological integrity of tropical secondary forests: concepts and indicators

open access: yesBiological Reviews, 2022
ABSTRACTNaturally regenerating forests or secondary forests (SFs) are a promising strategy for restoring large expanses of tropical forests at low cost and with high environmental benefits. This expectation is supported by the high resilience of tropical forests after natural disturbances, yet this resilience can be severely reduced by human impacts ...
