Xylem Parenchyma—Role and Relevance in Wood Functioning in Trees
Woody plants are characterised by a highly complex vascular system, wherein the secondary xylem (wood) is responsible for the axial transport of water and various substances.

THE DEVELOPMENT OF THE SECONDARY WALL OF THE XYLEM IN ACER PSEUDOPLATANUS [PDF]
The development of the spirally thickened xylem element from a cambium initial of sycamore Acer pseudoplatanus has been traced by means of electron microscopy. The narrow elongated cambial initial undergoes considerable expansion in all dimensions. The cytoplasm at this stage is distributed in a thin skin between the cell wall and a large vacuole.

Mechanical properties and structure-function trade-offs in secondary xylem of young roots and stems.
Bending and torsional properties of young roots and stems were measured in nine woody angiosperms. The variation in mechanical parameters was correlated to wood anatomical traits and analysed with respect to the other two competing functions of xylem ...

Effects of ethylene on secondary xylem formation in Arabidopsis thaliana [PDF]
Ethylene has myriad roles as a plant hormone, ranging from senescence and defending against pathogen attacks to fruit ripening and interactions with other hormones.

Xylem versus phloem in secondary growth : a balancing act mediated by gibberellins [PDF]
Secondary growth generates wood, which constitutes most of the plant biomass. Despite considerable efforts over the last decade to uncover the genetic and molecular regulation of the vascular cambium, there is still much to learn about how it produces ...

ImageJ macro to count secondary xylem cells from A simple mathematical model of allometric exponential growth describes the early three-dimensional growth dynamics of secondary xylem in Arabidopsis roots [PDF]
Unravelling the specific growth dynamics of key tissues and organs is fundamental to understand how multicellular organisms orchestrate their different growth programmes.

Rapid Freezing and Immunocytochemistry Provide New Information on Cell Wall Formation in Woody Plants [PDF]
The rapid freeze and freeze substitution method for fixing the differentiating xylem has given us new information on cell wall assembly. Hemicelluloses are synthesized in the Golgi apparatus and transported to the inner surface of the developing cell ...

Pectin is a major component of plant cell walls, and the structure of pectin impacts on the properties of wood. Although we know that pectate lyase (PL, EC 4.2.2.2) has a major influence on the structure of pectin, our knowledge of Pectate lyase-like ...

A Small Guanosine Triphosphate Binding Protein PagRabE1b Promotes Xylem Development in Poplar
Rab GTPases are the subfamily of the small guanosine triphosphate (GTP)-binding proteins which participated in the regulation of various biological processes. Recent studies have found that plant Rabs play some specific functions.

Role of Cytokinin in Differentiation of Secondary Xylem Fibers [PDF]
The differentiation of secondary xylem fibers was studied in cultured hypocotyl segments of Helianthus annuus L. It is shown that cytokinin is both a limiting and controlling factor in the early stages of fiber differentiation. In the absence of kinetin or zeatin, there was no fiber differentiation. However, cytokinin could induce fiber differentiation
