The long road to a sustainable banana trade

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 5, Issue 5, Page 662-671, September 2023., 2023
Bananas are the world's most popular dessert fruit and a staple starch crop for millions in low‐ and middle‐income countries. The banana export trade that supplies North America, Europe, and other wealthy nations has a history fraught with exploitation and conflict.

How can policymakers and researchers develop effective insect resistance management guidelines? A quantitative and qualitative study of Brazilian farmers' perspectives and attitudes

open access: yesPLANTS, PEOPLE, PLANET, Volume 5, Issue 5, Page 722-735, September 2023., 2023
Today, over 80% of the US and Brazil row crop acreage has plants expressing insecticidal proteins to prevent the damage caused by caterpillars. These plants (crops expressing Bacillus thuringiensis, Bt, toxins) have brought several benefits to farmers, the environment, and society.

Diversification of JAZ‐MYC signaling function in immune metabolism

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 239, Issue 6, Page 2277-2291, September 2023., 2023
Summary Jasmonate (JA) re‐programs metabolism to confer resistance to diverse environmental threats. Jasmonate stimulates the degradation of JASMONATE ZIM‐DOMAIN (JAZ) proteins that repress the activity of MYC transcription factors. In Arabidopsis thaliana, MYC and JAZ are encoded by 4 and 13 genes, respectively.

De‐peripheralization and rural land capitalization: An empirical study of a public–private partnership in Zhaoqing, China

open access: yesRegional Science Policy &Practice, Volume 15, Issue 7, Page 1596-1611, September 2023., 2023
Abstract Classical urban geography theories determine the distribution of population, production and economic activities on geospatial features. Under this assumption, peripheral regions are rarely prosperous. Depopulation, weak industrial and employment structure and inefficient and fragmented land use form a negative feedback loop. Within the context

Exploring the metabolic basis of growth/defense trade‐offs in complex environments with Nicotiana attenuata plants cosilenced in NaMYC2a/b expression

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 238, Issue 1, Page 349-366, April 2023., 2023
Summary In response to challenges from herbivores and competitors, plants use fitness‐limiting resources to produce (auto)toxic defenses. Jasmonate signaling, mediated by MYC2 transcription factors (TF), is thought to reconfigure metabolism to minimize these formal costs of defense and optimize fitness in complex environments.

A trait–environment relationship approach to participatory plant breeding for organic agriculture

open access: yesNew Phytologist, Volume 235, Issue 3, Page 1018-1031, August 2022., 2022
Summary The extent of intraspecific variation in trait–environment relationships is an open question with limited empirical support in crops. In organic agriculture, with high environmental heterogeneity, this knowledge could guide breeding programs to optimize crop attributes.
