God Knows Best

Abstract An anthropology of horror can serve as a vernacular critique of financial speculation. Drawing on fieldwork in San Pedro, Paraguay, I track horror across three registers: pombero tricksters; plata yvyguy (buried money) as a founding myth of postwar finance; and obligations binding sesame farmers to monsters, patrones, and creditors.

Elevated cardiovascular risk associated with hormone replacement therapy: A comprehensive analysis of reproductive factors and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease outcomes in the UK Biobank cohort

Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, EarlyView.
Among 170,250 UK Biobank women (2006–2024), ever HRT use was associated with higher incident ASCVD risk (adjusted HR 1.13, 95% CI 1.08–1.18), largely driven by ischemic stroke. Associations were stronger in women ≤45 years and during perimenopause. Mediation via sex hormones, inflammatory markers, or lipids was minimal (<2%).

Tanner stages of thelarche in relation to anthropometric and ultrasound predictors in premenarcheal girls

We found a close correlation between thelarche and internal genital maturation on pelvic ultrasound, paralleling Tanner breast stages and supporting the concept of correlated external and internal pubertal development. Abstract Introduction Thelarche is often the first sign of puberty initiation in girls.

Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes mellitus by birth order: A descriptive study across lifetime reproductive history

Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, EarlyView.
Trends in gestational diabetes mellitus and hypertensive disorders of pregnancy by birth order are different. For diabetes, increased prevalence in later births can be explained by increased maternal age and secular changes across time periods, including increasing BMI.
