Total alkalinity production in a mangrove ecosystem reveals an overlooked Blue Carbon component

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography Letters, 2021
Mangroves have the capacity to sequester organic carbon (Corg) in their sediments permanently. However, the carbon budget of mangroves is also affected by the total alkalinity (TA) budget.

The Sediment Budget Estimator (SBE): A process model for the stochastic estimation of fluxes and budgets of sediment through submarine channel systems

open access: yesJournal of Sedimentary Research, 2022
Abstract Turbidity currents transport vast amounts of sediment through submarine channels onto deep-marine basin-floor fans. There is a lack of quantitative tools for the reconstruction of the sediment budget of these systems. The aim of this paper is to construct a simple and user-friendly model that can estimate turbidity-current ...

Reconstruction of a Long-Term, Reach-Scale Sediment Budget Using Lateral Channel Movement Data as a Proxy: A Case Study on the Lowland Section of the Tisza River, Hungary

open access: yesHydrology
Humans have influenced the sediment transport of rivers on a centurial scale. Our goal was to use the rate of lateral channel processes as a proxy to reconstruct sediment budget (SB) changes of a lowland river (Middle Tisza, Hungary) on a historical ...

Four-Dimensional Investigation of Gravel Beach Ridge Accretion and 50 Years of Beach Recharge at Dungeness, UK, Using Historic Images, GPR and Lidar (HIGL)

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2021
Dungeness is a cuspate foreland on the south coast of England that is the largest shingle feature in Europe and includes hundreds of beach ridges. It is also the location of two nuclear power stations that were constructed in the 1960s.

DigiChrom: A Domain Ontology for Semantic Representation of Trivalent Chromium Platings and Its Large Language Model‐Based Alignment With Multiple Mid‐Level Ontologies

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Digitalizing electroplating requires both domain knowledge and interoperability. This work introduces PlatOn, a domain ontology for trivalent chromium plating and coating characterization, and a hybrid pipeline that aligns it to a mid‐level reference ontology by combining eight similarity metrics with language model reasoning. Expert‐validated mappings

The Making of a Gravel Beach (Cavo, Elba Island, Italy)

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2021
This paper presents the history and evolution of the different projects carried out from 1999 to 2008 at Cavo beach in the Elba Island, Italy. The village of Cavo almost completely lost its beach in the 1970s due to the reduction of sedimentary input ...

Sediment Budget in the Taiwan Strait with High Fluvial Sediment Inputs from Mountainous Rivers: New Observations and Synthesis

open access: yesTerrestrial, Atmospheric and Oceanic Sciences, 2008
The shallow Taiwan Strait at the southern opening of the East China Sea (ECS) receives abundant sediments from turbid mountainous rivers in Taiwan. The volume of sediment is among the highest sediment yields on the global surface.

Centennial to Multi-Decadal Morphology Change and Sediment Budget Alteration with Consideration of the Impacts of the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake Tsunami along the Nobiru Coast, Japan

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2021
The Nobiru Coast is situated on the southwest of the Ishinomaki Bay. The 2011 Great East Japan Tsunami severely devastated the Nobiru Coast and the adjacent Naruse River mouth. In this study, an investigation was conducted based on the available historic

Monolithic Oxidation Enables Ultrathin Vertically Graded Tantalum Oxide for Low‐Voltage, Low‐Variability Memristive Switching

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Monolithic UV‐ozone oxidation of Ta forms an ultrathin Ta2O5/TaOx bilayer enabling resistive switching with a vertical defect gradient. A stoichiometric surface layer over an oxygen‐deficient sublayer promotes localized filament nucleation near the top interface, enabling low‐voltage operation, and reduced cycle‐to‐cycle variability.
