Physiology of seed ageing

Outlook on Agriculture, 1985
The ageing of seeds is a matter of considerable practical significance as it initially results in reduced vigour and eventually in a fall in germination. This article reviews the physiological factors involved and methods by which the potential of seed lots can be reliably determined.

Aging, Free Radicals, and Antioxidants in Wheat Seeds

Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, 1999
Free radical oxidative attack is considered a major cause of disruption and deteriorative changes observed in aged seeds. Antioxidant defense mechanisms may remove potentially damaging molecular species, and carotenoids may act as radical scavengers. The content of lutein, the major carotenoid in wheat seeds, was determined in the flours.

Cytogenetical effects of ageing in seeds

Genetica, 1984
Freshly harvested seeds of soybean and barley were artificially aged. The progeny showed a marked decrease in mitotic index and chromosomal aberrations of various types increased at both mitosis and meiosis, resulting in a significant loss of pollen viability as the ageing advanced.

Effect of Lanthanum on Aged Seed Germination of Rice

Biological Trace Element Research, 2000
Attempts were made to promote germination of natural aged rice seeds by treating them with lanthanum nitrate. In tests to measure the germination rate, germination index, and vigor index of natural aged rice seeds were found to be significantly increased by lanthanum.

Changes in Chenopodium rubrum Seeds with Aging

Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences, 2005
Abstract: We studied antioxidative system, germination, growth, and flowering in vitro in Chenopodium rubrum seeds of different ages. Peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase activity, as well as glutathione status, were determined in 2.5‐h imbibed seeds. Germination was tested under controlled conditions.

Mechanisms of seed ageing in coffee [PDF]

open access: possible, 2007
The biochemical and physiological basis of the intermediate seed storage behaviour was examined by investigating the effects of equilibrium drying under relative humidities (RH) of 9-81% and of storage at 20 or 5°C on coffee seed viability and antioxidant, lipid and sugar status.

[Seed aging and survival mechanisms].

Journal de la Societe de biologie, 2009
Aging and death are universal to living systems. In temperate climate latitudes the mature seeds of higher plants are exposed to aging and have developed resistance mechanisms allowing survival and plant propagation. In addition to the physicochemical properties of the seed that confer stress resistance, the protein metabolism contributes importantly ...

Natural ageing of wheat seeds

2004
Seed natural ageing is accompanied by the loss of the ability to germinate and by a reduction in viability. Viability loss is associated with damage to the DNA, changes in the synthesis of RNA and in enzymatic patterns. The loss of viability, in Triticum durum, is accompanied in imbibed seeds, among other components, by a reduced synthesis and poly(A ...
