Seed germination, an important developmental stage in the life cycle of seed plants, is regulated by complex signals. Melatonin is a signaling molecule associated with seed germination under stressful conditions, although the underlying regulatory ...

Seed dormancy and germination are complex adaptive traits of higher plants that are influenced by a large number of genes and environmental factors. Studies of genetics and physiology have shown the important roles of the plant hormones abscisic acid and gibberellin in the regulation of dormancy and germination.

The seed is the means by which a plant reproduces and multiplies, and which allows it to persist through adverse conditions. Inside a protective seed coat, it consists of an embryo together with nutrient reserves, and which support the growth of the embryo until the seedling is able to carry out photosynthesis and obtain nutrients from the soil via the

Seed storage is often accompanied by a progressive loss of germination vigour and viability. In the present study, we have used Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh. seeds as a model, and carried out differential proteomics to investigate seed vigour. In our system, based on a controlled deterioration treatment (CDT), we compared seed lots treated for ...

The fundamental importance of germination physiology to agriculture and horticulture is so obvious that it need hardly be stated, for almost all of man’s reliance on plants depends on the germinability of their seeds. The most straightforward dependence is when seeds are the starting materials for crops; in this case, we require that the seeds have ...

Plant life begins with seed formation and is renewed when seed germinates. Seeds are highly dehydrated, quiescent or resting structures, and carriers of the next generation in the life cycle of plants. Seeds have different shapes and sizes, ranging from the smallest orchid seed (10−6 g) to the huge seed of the double coconut palm (30 kg).

Knowledge of the mature seed and its germination is of importance in the study of seed formation. Indeed, embryogeny and germination are extensions of each other separated by a period of relative metabolic inactivity called quiescence, and are essentially different phases of the continuing process of embryo growth and development. Obviously, the nature

Effect of Penicillin on Seed Germination
Science, 1946The substances present in therapeutic penicillin which cause inhibition of germination and root growth are represented by the indole-3-acetic acid type of compound. Since this and phenylacetic acid were known to be present in the penicillin tested, it is concluded that they are responsible for the inhibition activity against seeds.
