More Science Than Art: The First Botanical Garden in Portugal (c. 1650)

open access: yesRenaissance Studies, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Gabriel Grisley, a German physician, came to Portugal and founded a garden near the Xabregas River in Lisbon, during the 1610s under the Spanish kings' rule. In view of the utility a botanic garden represented for the kingdom, he was able to obtain a royal privilege from King João IV during the Restauration War against the Spanish (1640–1668).

A Journey Between Science and the Arts: Templates for the Depiction of the Pineapple (Sixteenth to Eighteenth Centuries)

open access: yesRenaissance Studies, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Native to America, the pineapple—Ananas comosus (L.) Merr.—delighted the Europeans who came across it. The fruit was mentioned by the voyagers and missionaries who observed and tasted it in the Americas and, from the 1500s onwards, infused reports, chronicles and natural history treatises with colour and flavour.

Immunohistochemical Characterisation of Mismatch Repair Proteins in Feline Cancers: A Pilot Study Using Validated Cross‐Reactive Antibodies

open access: yesVeterinary and Comparative Oncology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT DNA mismatch repair (MMR) deficiency is a clinically important biomarker in human oncology, yet its relevance in feline neoplasia remains poorly understood due to limited characterisation and the absence of validated reagents. In this study, we established a practical immunohistochemistry (IHC) approach for evaluating feline MMR proteins by ...

Minor Risk to Contract Metazoan Parasites via the Consumption of Edible Snails, Born and Reared in France

open access: yesZoonoses and Public Health, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In a context of food security of animal consumption and diversification of protein sources, we have studied the risks to contract metazoan parasites through the consumption of ‘gros‐gris’ snails (Cornu aspersum maximum) sampled in 12 French farms.

Synchrony within Aβ mechanoreceptor subtypes governs signal propagation to primary somatosensory cortex

open access: yesThe Journal of Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract figure legend We used an optogenetic gain‐of‐function manipulation to investigate how sensory signals from two subtypes of Aβ low threshold mechanoreceptors (LTMRs) contribute to the cortical representation of touch. CatCh, a sensitive and fast channelrhodopsin variant, enables pulsed‐light generation of high‐frequency action potential trains ...

Short‐term agronomic consequences of industrial hemp incorporation into traditional corn–soybean rotations

open access: yesAgrosystems, Geosciences &Environment, Volume 9, Issue 4, December 2026.
Abstract Kentucky producers have sought to add industrial hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) for grain, fiber, and/or floral material to their cropping systems since hemp's legalization in the 2018 Farm Bill. This study sought to quantify hemp's impact on ecosystem services provisioned by the traditional corn (Zea mays L.)–soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merr ...
