Factors that shape seed mass evolution [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, 2005
We used correlated divergence analysis to determine which factors have been most closely associated with changes in seed mass during seed plant evolution. We found that divergences in seed mass have been more consistently associated with divergences in growth form than with divergences in any other variable.

Identification of Additive–Epistatic QTLs Conferring Seed Traits in Soybean Using Recombinant Inbred Lines

open access: yesFrontiers in Plant Science, 2020
Seed weight and shape are important agronomic traits that affect soybean quality and yield. In the present study, we used image analysis software to evaluate 100-seed weight and seed shape traits (length, width, perimeter, projection area, length/width ...

The relationship between shape and size of diaspores depends on being seeds or fruits [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
The relationship between the size and shape of diaspores was investigated in angiosperms and gymnosperms including determining if being a seed or fruit was a factor. Size was expressed as volume and shape as the departure from a perfect idealized sphere.

Three‐dimensional X‐ray‐computed tomography of 3300‐ to 6000‐year‐old Citrullus seeds from Libya and Egypt compared to extant seeds throws doubts on species assignments

open access: yesPlants, People, Planet, 2021
Societal Impact Statement The watermelon (Citrullus lanatus subsp. vulgaris) is among the world's most important fruit crops. We here use C‐14 dating and morphometric analysis to test whether ancient seeds can be identified to species level, which would ...

Seed Geometry in the Vitaceae

open access: yesPlants, 2021
The Vitaceae Juss., in the basal lineages of Rosids, contains sixteen genera and 950 species, mainly of tropical lianas. The family has been divided in five tribes: Ampelopsideae, Cisseae, Cayratieae, Parthenocisseae and Viteae. Seed shape is variable in

Seed Architecture Shapes Embryo Metabolism in Oilseed Rape   [PDF]

open access: yesThe Plant Cell, 2013
Abstract Constrained to develop within the seed, the plant embryo must adapt its shape and size to fit the space available. Here, we demonstrate how this adjustment shapes metabolism of photosynthetic embryo. Noninvasive NMR-based imaging of the developing oilseed rape (Brassica napus) seed illustrates that, following embryo bending ...

Seed Morphology in Silene Based on Geometric Models

open access: yesPlants, 2020
Seed description in morphology is often based on adjectives such as “spherical”, “globular”, or “reniform”, but this does not provide a quantitative method.
