Seed quality in carrots: the effects of seed crop plant density, harvest date and seed grading on seed and seedling variability

Journal of Horticultural Science, 1983
SummaryCarrot seeds (Chantenay types) harvested 44–61 days after anthesis (early harvest) had higher coefficients of variation (CVs) of embryo length and subsequent seedling weight than those of seeds harvested 70–92 days after anthesis (late harvest). Seed grading after harvesting the seed crop reduced the CVs of some of the early harvested seed crops.

Seed density affects post‐dispersal seed predation: evidence from a seed removal experiment of 62 species

Integrative Zoology, 2020
AbstractPost‐dispersal seed predation plays an important role in plant demography and biodiversity maintenance. However, the effects of seed density on seed predation from previous studies have been inconsistent. We dissected the effects of density on the 2‐step processes of seed predation using 101 520 seeds from 62 plant species in an alpine pine ...

Effects of seed and carabid densities on the weed seed predation service

2017
Farming relies heavily on pesticides in order to maintain/increase crop production, yet, awareness of the adverse effects of pesticides on the environment and on biodiversity has triggered the search for alternative, non-chemical, pest management strategies. In arable systems, weeds remain one of the most challenging management issue.

String-Seeded Spirals: Origin of Rotation and the Density of the Halo

Physical Review Letters, 1986
Galactic halos seeded by loops of string in a universe dominated by dark matter fall into two categories: (1) Non-self-intersecting loops precipitate nearly spherically symmetric collapse and lead to a halo with low angular momentum J and a density profile rho--r/sup -9/4/. (2) Progeny of a self-intersecting primary loop recollapse into a single object

Density‐dependent germination and the role of seed leachate

Australian Journal of Ecology, 1998
Abstract While density dependence is a central issue in much of plant ecology, it is often overlooked during the crucial seed germination period of the plant life‐cycle. Here, patterns of germination in relation to initial seed density for 12 phylogenetically‐diverse perennial plant species are described from laboratory experiments. When each of the 12

Consequences of reduced bird densities for seed dispersal

2013
The decline in range and density of frugivorous birds worldwide could have consequences for the functioning of ecosystem processes such as seed dispersal. I endeavoured to determine the effects of bird declines on seed dispersal and assess the current status of dispersal in New Zealand.

Enhanced diamond nucleation density utilising seeding

Diamond and Related Materials, 1998
This paper reports on a new technique for surface pre-treatment of silicon and other substrate materials to enhance diamond nucleation before diamond deposition. Polycrystalline diamond particles (ballas or cauliflower diamond particles) are grown in a CVD environment under hydrocarbon concentrations of 8-15%.
