Assessing Seedling Quality

1984
Characteristics of planting stock which reflect quality (defined here as performance potential) are categorized as either “performance” attributes or “material” attributes. Performance attributes, such as root-growth potential, cold hardiness, and stress resistance, are assessed by subjecting whole seedlings to certain environmental regimes and ...

Oak Seedlings Grown in Different Light Qualities

Physiologia Plantarum, 1979
AbstractSeedlings of oak (Quercus robur) were germinated in darkness for 3 weeks and then given continuous light or short pulses of light (5–8 min every day). The morphological development was followed during 25 days. In continuous white, blue, and red light the stem growth terminated after about 10 days by formation of a resting bud.

[Assessing indices of container seedling quality].

Ying yong sheng tai xue bao = The journal of applied ecology, 2002
In this paper, the assessing indices of container seedlings quality were synthesized in accordance with growth and physiological factors. The results showed that the seedling quality might be determined by the dormancy state of terminal bud, nutrient condition of plant, and the state of root system.

Defoliation increases nutritional quality and allelochemics of pine seedlings

Oecologia, 1985
The concentration of phenols, procyanidins, and protein in pine foliage was determined at two and eight weeks following mechanical defoliation of 0, 25, 50, and 75%. Changes in both mature and immature ponderosa pine, Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws, foliage were monitored.

Nursery Cultural Practices: Impacts on Seedling Quality

1984
Better understanding and implementation of nurserycultural practices to improve seedling quality will enable better matching of seedlings to forest sites, reducing the chance of regeneration delay and improving future growth of forest stands. This chapter reviews a number of important cultural practices and the ways in which they affect indicators of ...

Predicting field performance using seedling quality assessment

New Forests, 1997
Seedling quality is defined as “fitness for purpose”. Attributes for assessing seedling quality are grouped in “material attributes” that can be rapidly assessed by any number of direct or indirect methods, and “performance attributes” that are assessed by subjecting whole seedlings to certain environmental regimes and evaluating their growth response.
