Estimation of Astronomical Seeing with Neural Networks at the Maidanak Observatory

open access: yesAtmosphere, 2023
In the present article, we study the possibilities of machine learning for the estimation of seeing at the Maidanak Astronomical Observatory (38∘40′24″ N, 66∘53′47″ E) using only Era-5 reanalysis data.

Statistics of turbulence profile at Cerro Tololo [PDF]

open access: yesMon.Not.Roy.Astron.Soc. 340 (2003) 52, 2002
Results of 3-month continuous monitoring of turbulence profile and seeing at Cerro Tololo (Chile) in May-July 2002 are presented. Some 28000 low-resolution profiles were measured by a new MASS single-star turbulence monitor, accompanied by seeing data from DIMM. The median seeing was 0.95 arcseconds.

Seeing Through Fog Without Seeing Fog: Deep Multimodal Sensor Fusion in Unseen Adverse Weather

open access: yesComputer Vision and Pattern Recognition, 2019
The fusion of multimodal sensor streams, such as camera, lidar, and radar measurements, plays a critical role in object detection for autonomous vehicles, which base their decision making on these inputs.

Risk Automatic Prediction for Social Economy Companies using Camels [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2022
Governments have to supervise and inspect social economy enterprises (SEEs). However, inspecting all SEEs is not possible due to the large number of SEEs and the low number of inspectors in general. We proposed a prediction model based on a machine learning approach.

Vlasov Simulation of Emissive Plasma Sheath with Energy-Dependent Secondary Emission Coefficient and Improved Modeling for Dielectric Charging Effects [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
A one dimensional Vlasov Poisson simulation code is employed to investigate the plasma sheath considering electron induced secondary electron emission (SEE) and backscattering. The SEE coefficient is commonly treated as constant in a range of plasma simulations, here improved SEE model of a charged dielectric wall is constructed which includes the wall

Algorithm Aversion: People Erroneously Avoid Algorithms after Seeing Them Err

open access: yesJournal of experimental psychology. General, 2014
Research shows that evidence-based algorithms more accurately predict the future than do human forecasters. Yet when forecasters are deciding whether to use a human forecaster or a statistical algorithm, they often choose the human forecaster.

Seeing the Light: Advancing Materials Chemistry through Photopolymerization.

open access: yesAngewandte Chemie, 2019
The application of photochemistry to polymer and material science has led to the development of complex yet efficient systems for polymerization, polymer post-functionalization, and advanced materials production. Using light to activate chemical reaction

Seeing the forest for the trees: Visualizing platformization and its governance

open access: yesNew Media & Society, 2020
The complexities of platforms are increasingly at odds with the narrow legal and economic concepts in which their governance is grounded. This article aims to analyze platformization through the metaphorical lens of a tree to make sense of information ...

To see or not to see

open access: yesActa Ophthalmologica Scandinavica, 2007
Abstract Purpose: “Sighted C3H” mice with a normal Pde6b gene, were compared to wild‐type C3H/HeH mice with the strain‐specific Pde6b(rd1) mutation causing retinal degeneration, BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice. Methods: All mice were screened for morphological and visual alterations by funduscopy, slit lamp biomicroscopy, laser interference biometry, ERG and ...

Anthropophanies. Est-il possible de voir un être humain ? Lectures bibliques

open access: yesPallas, 2013
In the Bible, seeing God is claimed to be impossible for humans; yet some testify that they did see him and God himself condescends to let himself be seen. Conversely, is it sure that humans can be seen?
