Phasing segmented mirrors using defocused images at visible wavelengths [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Plans for future optical telescopes of diameter more than 10 m are based on segmented mirrors, made up of hundreds or even thousands of segments. A challenge for these telescopes is the alignment in piston (cophasing) where phase differences between ...

Wind-induced deformations in a segmented mirror [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Optics, 2002
A Zernike expansion of wind-induced deformations in a segmented mirror is described. The wind model is a frozen turbulent field with a Kolmogorov spectrum for scales smaller than the outer scale and a flat spectrum for scales larger than the outer scale.

Large Range of a High-Precision, Independent, Sub-Mirror Three-Dimensional Co-Phase Error Sensing and Correction Method via a Mask and Population Algorithm

open access: yesSensors
The emergence of segmented mirrors is expected to solve the design, processing, manufacturing, testing, and launching of space telescopes of large apertures.

Reshaping Field of View and Resolution with Segmented Reflectors: Bridging the Gap between Rotating and Solid-State LiDARs

open access: yesSensors, 2020
This paper describes the first simulations and experimental results of a novel segmented Light Detection And Ranging (LiDAR) reflector. Large portions of the rotating LiDAR data are typically discarded due to occlusion or a misplaced field of view (FOV).

Design considerations for a highly segmented mirror [PDF]

open access: yesApplied Optics, 2003
Design issues for a 30-m highly segmented mirror are explored, with emphasis on parametric models of simple, inexpensive segments. A mirror with many small segments offers cost savings through quantity production and permits high-order active and adaptive wave-front corrections.

Reciprocal control of viral infection and phosphoinositide dynamics

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Phosphoinositides, although scarce, regulate key cellular processes, including membrane dynamics and signaling. Viruses exploit these lipids to support their entry, replication, assembly, and egress. The central role of phosphoinositides in infection highlights phosphoinositide metabolism as a promising antiviral target.

Distributed H∞ Control of Segmented Telescope Mirrors [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Segmented mirrors are to be used in the next generation of the ground-based optical telescopes to increase the size of the primary mirrors. A larger primary mirror enables the collection of more light, which results in higher image resolutions.

Reconstructing enzyme evolution by protein engineering

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Natural enzyme evolution can be retraced by protein engineering methods such as directed evolution, rational design, and ancestral sequence reconstruction. These approaches reveal how enzymes emerged from ligand‐binding scaffolds, developed varying substrate preferences, formed oligomeric complexes, adapted to environmental changes, and evolved novel ...
