This paper introduces consumption segregation, a new margin of residential segregation, and examines its patterns, causes, and discusses its aggregate consequences. We use new longitudinal and highly granular data to measure consumption segregation in the United States and document that it is high but relatively stable over the past 15 years, with ...

We propose a set of axioms for the measurement of school-based segregation with any number of ethnic groups. These axioms are motivated by two criteria. The first is evenness: how much do ethnic groups’ distributions across schools differ? The second is representativeness: how different are schools’ ethnic distributions from one another?

Good segregation, bad segregation
Planning Perspectives, 1996Much of the literature on segregation is underlain by an implicit model which argues that groups start highly segregated in inner city locations and disperse over time. Parallel and related to this spatial pattern is the social process of assimilation. Groups start highly segregated and unassimilated and become dispersed and assimilated over time.

Spatial Vision, 1989
Six experiments investigated the preattentive segregation of line-like patterns composed of discrete elements in a background of distractors. The results indicate that other factors in addition to spatial density influence line segregation. Edge alignment, edge length and principal axis orientation also affect line segregation.

Segregation with Communication
2000We have developed a general definition of segregation in the context of Z system specifications. This definition is general enough to allow multi-way communications between otherwise segregated parties along defined channels. We have an abstract definition of segregation in terms of the traces allowed by systems, a concrete style of specification to ...

The intergranular segregation of boron in Ni3Al: Equilibrium segregation and segregation kinetics
Acta Metallurgica et Materialia, 1992Abstract The grain boundary B content of high-purity Ni-24 at.% Al alloys containing 0.048, 0.144, 0.240 and 0.480 at.% B (100, 300, 500, 1000 ppm mass) has been determined for samples aged from 1323 to 873 K for sufficient times to attain equilibrium. The B content was derived from Auger electron spectra of the intergranular fracture facets.

Many antigen receptors of the immune system belong to the family of multichain immune recognition receptors (MIRRs). Binding of ligand (antigen) to MIRR results in receptor phosphorylation, triggering downstream signaling pathways and cellular activation. How ligand binding induces this phosphorylation is not yet understood. In this Chapter, we discuss

Plasmid Segregation Mechanisms
Annual Review of Genetics, 2005Bacterial plasmids encode partitioning (par) loci that ensure ordered plasmid segregation prior to cell division. par loci come in two types: those that encode actin-like ATPases and those that encode deviant Walker-type ATPases. ParM, the actin-like ATPase of plasmid R1, forms dynamic filaments that segregate plasmids paired at mid-cell to daughter ...

Segregated Schools in Segregated Societies
Childhood, 2006In segregated societies such as Northern Ireland, schools may become sites of risk rather than sites of learning. This is particularly likely to be the case in interface areas, which are demarcated by peace– lines and other symbolic boundaries. Drawing on maps and focus group discussions with teenagers from interface areas in North Belfast, the article

Wheat: Grading and Segregation
2004A key demand of flour millers and their customers is a consistent product. Unfortunately, the quality of wheat can be variable, not only between years but also between shipments that depend on the mode of transport – be it an ocean vessel, a rail wagon, or a road truck.
