Seismic Risk Analysis of Revenue Losses, Gross Regional Product and transportation systems. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Natural threats like earthquakes, hurricanes or tsunamis have shown seri- ous impacts on communities. In the past, major earthquakes in the United States like Loma Prieta 1989, Northridge 1994, or recent events in Italy like L’Aquila 2009 or Emilia 2012 ...

Thorncliffe Formation: A proglacial to subglacial lacustrine basin sequence, Greater Toronto Region, Canada

open access: yesBoreas, EarlyView.
Map of Lower sediment (LS) thickness is a surrogate for the distribution of Thorncliffe Formation (TF) and ~75% of TF thickness from the slope of Niagara Escarpment east to Brighton. Inset images show the LS sequence at the Don Valleys brickyards (DVBY) and undeformed TF sand and gravel (~15 m) below Newmarket Till (NT) at sites L and Co.

Tracking Dehydration Reactions and Fossil Fluid Flux in Shear Zones Using Garnet Microstructures

open access: yesJournal of Metamorphic Geology, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Shear zones act as preferential fluid pathways during prograde and retrograde stages of metamorphism. Nonetheless, we still have limited knowledge of the drainage and permeability of natural settings. The preserved signature of fluid in exhumed rocks provides insights into fluid flow during burial and exhumation.

Uncertainty and sensitivity analysis of functional risk curves based on Gaussian processes

open access: yes, 2016
A functional risk curve gives the probability of an undesirable event as a function of the value of a critical parameter of a considered physical system. In several applicative situations, this curve is built using phenomenological numerical models which

Banking Development and the Economic Impact of Natural Disasters: From Short to Long Term Effects

open access: yesJournal of Regional Science, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper investigates how financial development and local banking structures shape the economic resilience of communities in the aftermath of natural disasters. Focusing on Italian municipalities hit by earthquakes between 2008 and 2022, we explore the role of banking presence, particularly cooperative banks, in supporting recovery.

Progressive Reliability Method and Its Application to Offshore Mooring Systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Assessing the reliability of complex systems (e.g. structures) is essential for a reliability-based optimal design that balances safety and costs of such systems.

Home Safe Home: Safety Gains Through Telework During the Covid‐19 Pandemic

open access: yesLABOUR, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT This paper exploits exogenous shifts in work organisation during the Covid‐19 pandemic to study the implications of hybrid and remote work arrangements on occupational safety. Combining accident registers and household survey microdata from Hungary, we are able to address potential selection and reporting bias, and reliably identify the ...

New knowledge about shock events that affected the L‐chondrite parent body from two heavily shocked L6 meteorite finds

open access: yesMeteoritics &Planetary Science, EarlyView.
Abstract We report new results from a study of shock‐related features in the L6 ordinary chondrites Northwest Africa (NWA) 4672 and NWA 12841. Our observations confirm the occurrence of eight high‐pressure (HP) minerals in each meteorite, namely, ringwoodite, majorite, akimotoite, wadsleyite, albitic jadeite, lingunite, tuite, and xieite.

Developing a global risk engine [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Risk analysis is a critical link in the reduction of casualties and damages due to earthquakes. Recognition of this relation has led to a rapid rise in demand for accurate, reliable and flexible risk assessment software.
