Deformation‐based design of seismically isolated bridges
Earthquake Engineering & Structural Dynamics, 2022AbstractA performance‐based design procedure is proposed for seismically isolated bridges with/without supplemental energy dissipation devices. Considering multiple performance levels (PLs), the proposed method initially identifies the critical hazard level and “near‐optimal” alternatives of the isolation system.

SILER Project: Design of the Seismic Isolators
Volume 8: Seismic Engineering, 2014This paper describes the SILER (Seismic-Initiated event risk mitigation in LEad-cooled Reactors) Project results obtained so far in the design of the seismic isolation system of two nuclear power plants: the ELSY configuration for the LFR (Lead-Cooled Fast Reactor) design and the MYRRHA configuration for the accelerator-driven systems (ADS).

Risk-targeted design of seismically isolated buildings
Journal of Building Engineering, 2022Abstract Seismic isolation has been used to improve the seismic performance of buildings for the last decades. However, it has been shown that the code-based displacement capacity of isolation members does not provide adequate collapse probabilities for different Risk Categories of ASCE 7–16.

Optimization Criteria In Design Of Seismic Isolated Building
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2008Use of new anti‐seismic techniques is certainly suitable for buildings of strategic importance and, in general, in the case of very high risk. For ordinary buildings, instead, the cost of base isolation system should be balanced by an equivalent saving in the structure.

Design of Structures with Seismic Isolation
2001This chapter surveys the principles, benefits, and the feasibility of seismic isolation. The basic principles of seismic isolation are introduced first. Contrary to a perception held by many engineers, neither the concept of seismic isolation is new nor its application is necessarily complex.

Seismic Isolation Design Code for Highway Bridges
Seismic Engineering, Volume 2, 2002This paper presents the seismic isolation design code for highway bridges. This is based on the 1996 Design Specifications for Highway Bridges, Part. V: Seismic Design, issued by the Japan Road Association in December 1996. This paper focuses on the outlines of the seismic isolation design code including the seismic design basic principles, design ...

Seismic Design of Lifeline Bridge using Hybrid Seismic Isolation
Journal of Bridge Engineering, 2002This paper presents the merits of a hybrid seismic isolation system used for the seismic design of a major bridge. The bridge is analyzed for two different arrangements of seismic isolation systems. The first arrangement consists of friction pendulum bearings at all substructure locations; the other incorporates a hybrid system where laminated ...

Design experience on seismically isolated buildings
Nuclear Engineering and Design, 1991Abstract This paper describes the practical problems associated with the structural design of a group of seismically isolated buildings now under construction in Ancona, Italy. These structures are the first seismically isolated buildings in Italy. The Ancona region is in zone 2 of the Italian Seismic Code. It has a design acceleration of 0.07 g

SEISMIC RELIABILITY-BASED DESIGN OF STRUCTUTRES ISOLATED BY FPS
Proceedings of the VII European Congress on Computational Methods in Applied Sciences and Engineering (ECCOMAS Congress 2016), 2016The paper deals with the seismic reliability of base-isolated structural systems equipped with friction pendulum isolators (FPS) in order to provide useful design recommen-dations. A two-degree-of-freedom model is adopted by accounting for the superstructure flex-ibility, whereas the FPS isolator behaviour is described by adopting a widespread model ...

Design Aspects in Seismic Isolation: Application to Retrofit Churches
International Journal of Architectural Heritage, 2008The severe damage to masonry buildings after earthquakes has pointed out the need of studying new seismic protection techniques in order to guarantee appropriate safety levels against earthquakes. In historical buildings, such as basilica churches, a seismic rehabilitation should have also a minimum impact on the construction, preserving the original ...
