Moment and moment magnitude of seismic events located by stacking

Geophysics, 2014
ABSTRACT Determination of moment and moment magnitude for seismic events located by stacking has been an unsolved problem because current methodologies cannot be applied. To solve this problem, we have developed a methodology for moment magnitude Mw estimation of (micro) seismic events.

Effect of seismic moment–area scaling on apparent stress–seismic moment relationship

Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 2012
Abstract Two alternative formulations of the apparent stress, representing homogeneous crack and triangle pulse rupture models, are tested. They are termed seismic state equations and express the apparent stress, τ a , as a function of, respectively, two or three other earthquake parameters: seismic moment, M 0 , rupture area, A , and, in the ...

Defining the scalar moment of a seismic source with a general moment tensor

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1999
Abstract We compare several published definitions of the scalar moment M0, a measure of the size of a seismic disturbance derived from the second-order seismic moment tensor M (with eigenvalues m1 ≥ m3 ≥ m2). While arbitrary, a useful definition is in terms of a total moment, MT0 = MI + MD, where MI = |M|, with M = (m1 + m2 + m3)/3, is ...

Seismic Moment Tensors

1981
Originally introduced as a physically meaningful tool to obtain the excitation coefficients of the normal modes of the earth, the moment tensor has since been appreciated as a concept of more general utility. This paper aims to review this development, and at the same time to obtain simple approximations which are hoped to bridge a gap between abstract

Seismic moment connections for MRFs

Journal of Constructional Steel Research, 1988
Abstract This paper provides an overview of the state of the art for the design of steel moment connections for moment-resisting frames (MRFs) for regions of high seismic risk. The need to design such connections to be ductile with the capacity to sustain full load reversals is indicated first.

Simultaneous determination of the seismic moment and attenuation of seismic surface waves

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1969
Abstract A comprehensive spectral analysis of Love and Rayleigh waves was made on the Parkfield earthquake of June 28, 1966. Using tentative Q values obtained by the usual two-station method for continental and oceanic paths, the observed spectra were corrected for dissipation, and used for obtaining a tentative source model.

Seismic moment of great deep shocks

Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 1976
Abstract The long-period Rayleigh waves were investigated for the largest four deep shocks in 1963–1973 to determine the seismic moment by the same technique as used for shallow earthquakes. The results could be used for a quantitative comparison of source parameters between shallow and deep events. Three of the four shocks occurred beneath the South

Earthquake magnitude or seismic moment in seismic hazard evaluation?

pure and applied geophysics, 1988
Seismic hazard analysis requires the estimation of the probabilities that earthquakes will take place within a region of interest, and the expected level of ground motion which will be received at a site during the nextt years. The earthquake magnitude has been used as a basic parameter, because it is available, under the assumption that the earthquake

Seismic Behavior of Moment Connections and Joints

Journal of the Structural Division, 1982
The behavior of moment connections and beam-column joints in moment resisting steel frames subjected to severe earthquakes is studied. The cyclic inelastic deformation capacities of different types of connections are discussed and design recommendations are presented that are intended to assure the development of plastic hinges in beams at the column ...

Estimating Explosion Yields Using Moment Tensor Solutions and Seismic Moment

Seismological Research Letters, 2022
Abstract Seismic moment, a measurable and well-understood quantity of seismic sources, is used to estimate the yield of explosions. Application of such a method in the past, as in the manner of mb-derived yields, has been complicated by the effect of variations in the explosion working point, depth, and secondary source effects (such as ...
