A SEISMIC MOMENT MAGNITUDE SCALE

Theaimofobtaininga single scale for earthquake magnitudes has led many studies in the past to either develop relationships among various existing scales or develop an altogether new scale to represent a wide range of magnitudes on a single scale.

Universality of the Seismic Moment-frequency Relation

pure and applied geophysics, 1999
—We analyze the seismic moment-frequency relation in various depth ranges and for different seismic regions, using Flinn-Engdahl's regionalization of global seismicity. Three earthquake lists of centroid-moment tensor data have been used the Harvard catalog, the USGS catalog, and the Huang et al. (1997) catalog of deep earthquakes.

Elastic multipole theory and seismic moment

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 1971
abstract Relationships between dynamic and static elastic multipoles derived from a general solution of the elastic-wave equation allow the direct application of results from elastostatic theory to problems in earthquake mechanism. For any theoretical model, the impulse of wave displacement (with can easily be found from long-period ...

Seismic source spectra and moment tensors

Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 1982
Abstract When the source spectrum is expanded in powers of frequency, the coefficient of the n th power is a linear function of the n th moment tensor. This shows explicitly the low-frequency approximation by moments of low degree, and suggests suitable ways of extrapolation.

Definition of Seismic Moment at a Discontinuity Interface

Bulletin of the Seismological Society of America, 2003
When considering a seismic source operating along a discontinuity interface, seismic moment has to be redefined considering the jump of rigidity. The traditional definition of seismic moment may lead to underestimation of the slip or rupture length of an earthquake.
